Working with my Drift Kit
Tuesday, December 01, 2009 10:26 AM
So I mocked my kit up and I thought it fit fine. I am on my one side skirt at the moment and I've got it attached securely to the body, but there are tons of gaps everywhere. Especially where the door jams are and underneath the door itself theres a gap. How do I use body filler and sand some pieces off effectively. It doesn't look bad from far away, but when you get up close it is pretty bad. Thanks!

pics would help.

and i certainly wouldnt use filler to fill gaps if they're anything like im picturing.

some doblue sided 3m tape may take care of it

I have used 3m double sided tape and the stuff doesn't stick worth crap. It might be good for mocking your kit up to your body, but it certainly doesn't stay....Here are some pics:

It has worked for millions of others, so i don't see why it wouldn't for you. Are you trying to apply it in the cold? are you prepping the surfaces correctly? Are you using the correct double sided tape?

I have used 3m double sided tape and the stuff doesn't stick worth crap. It might be good for mocking your kit up to your body, but it certainly doesn't stay....Here are some pics:

Here is towards the front where it is gapped at the top of the skirt as you can see:

Here is a closer shot of that gap:

Here is where it is alongside the bottom of the door, it is like that the whole length of the door even though in the next photo you can't see it because I took it at the wrong angle:

Here is where it is alongside the door, wrong angle but the gap is there:

Here is the rear of the skirt, the problem here is that the side skirt comes in the door and the door can't open. I am thinking sanding this down is the only way to make it work:

Here is a gap on the top of the rear part of the skirt:

In this last photo, you can see where I screwed it into the wheel well, and I ran out of skirt to do that. I am thinking if I used body filler to attach the skirt to the wheel well, it might hold it in better.

ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP YOU GUYS CAN GIVE ME WILL BE GREAT. WHEN I PUT IT ON BEFORE THIS I THOUGHT IT FIT BETTER BUT I DO NOT KNOW IF THE HUMIDITY MADE IT WARP OR WHAT HAPPENED. LIKE I SAID, I STAND ABOUT NINE FEET AWAY AND IT LOOKS GREAT, BUT ONCE YOU GET UP CLOSE IT LOOKS HORRIBLE. I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO DO THIS TO THE OTHER SIDE AND THE FRONT AND BACK KITS AS WELL. THANKS!

WOW!! Yeah you need to sand the edges of the kit to fit around the fenders. And you'll need to sand it flat along the whole kit. I cant believe how wavy that is

It's a fiberglass kit, your gonna have to do work to get it to fit. I had a full drift kit on my car at one time and my sides did the same thing. Took me about a week to get it straitened out to my liking.

Goddam. Clean the @!#$ off your car and the tape will stick. 3M tape is the same stuff your stock molding are held on with.

Yeah in those pics my car looks pretty bad, but my camera tends to intense things more than they are because it's so good. It does need a good cleaning though, but thats not the reason it didn't stick, I believe it is because of the cold is why it doesn't stick. It's expensive stuff and I don't think I need it. There is no way tape is gonna make that kit flush to my car, it bends so much.

So the dirt on the car was put there by the camera? Take up the bluedriftcavy on his offer to come and help you if he has some prior experience. Do not attempt to put body filler between any of those cracks or between the fender and the body kit.

This kit needs a bunch of work to get it fitting correctly.

I know that furious 2.2 bought it brand new. The only reason he sold it cheap is because he bought it cheap. And i have used 3M stuff all the time. clean the surface and it should hold just fine my friend

yeah it's not a bad kit, i am just saying the fitment is pretty bad. but I don't think the 3m tape is holding good because it is so cold out. bluedriftcavy when do you think you'd be able to come check everything out? i have both side skirts and the rear, and i am going to get a kit today that should fit in there without problems. thanks!

There are a lot of kits that you have to fine tune when you get them....A LOT !!!!...Just think, next time you get a kit you will have the experience under your belt and will know what to do....

well todays is total crap out. i have to drop a car off i just finished in the am tommorow. do you by chance have a garage or tent of some kind?

Re: Working with my Drift Kit

this is why you spend the money to buy a quality kit. that thing is going to take allot of work to fit good and look nice, your not going to want to use filler your going to want to use fiberglass and cloth and build up those areas where the gap is. and sand down the areas that dont fit close enough. good luck.

are you asking me if i have a garage?
yes i do have a two car garage and could probably use it if you help me put the kit on. i just bought a fiberglass repair kit that comes in like a quart or something, and i also bought body filler. im assuming you know how to make it look good. thanks!

Hahaha, 300 different people on this forum could tell him the proper way to go about it and he'll still ignore them.

body "filler" the word filler should have gave the best clue. step away from the car. should have kept my rear panels to send to someone that actually had a clue lol.
