I the person was stopped in front of me, cars in next lane moved, I accelerated, hit brakes, rear ended a taures SHO under 10mph.
He noticed a scratch, and said there was a dent but he pulled it out. We exchanged info.
Now this was at around 230. He went and got 2 estimates and it is now 415.
He called me back and said the first estimate was ~740$, the second ~1030$.
I was like wow. He said the body shop found a crack under the bumper.
And then he told me a new bumper was 700$. So I have to decide to go through insurance or just pay it.
Here is a picture.
So the price is rediculous. There were already other scratches
The scratch is the orange spot near the bottem right.
That sounds a little far fetched for me man...i think hes trying to rip u a new one...and 700 for a new bumper?? that sounds insane, especially for a taures.
just my .02
call a ford dealer and ask them how much a bumper is brand new. im sure its cheaper than 700.
It doesn't look that bad. Offer him like $200 cash. If he's willing to live with a small scratch then he will be $200 richer, and you won't have to pay the full price.
Insurance companies won't ever need to know, and your rates won't suffer.
He's trying to rip you.....@!#$in' SHO owners.
My buddy has a SHO graveyard at his house. I'm sure he has a few bumpers you can give that asshat.

Ask to see the estimates. Post what is on them here. Don't just hand him over some money. Find out what your deductable is
also and then see what you want to do. Sounds alittle high to me. Unless he really has some damage under the bumper where
he needs a new absorber and reinforcement.
And you never know, that bumper could be 500 dollars. It is an SHO bumper and not a regular Taurus bumper.
Ask to see the actual estimates yourself. There's no way in hell he NEEDS a new bumper... but check the estimate yourself, see what all is written on there, and post it up... that's farking rediculous.
Some kid opened up his door into mine at PSU on Thursday... I finally got his tag today wheen I seen him again (he took off the first time). Took some nice size paint chips off my door (bigger than that orange spot).
I'm not asking for a new door... I called the officer I made the report left, his partner called me back and will foward him the info. I wouldn't ask for a new door because of that sheesh... I just want my damn handle painted. Sure sounds petty, but it's my first brand new car, and means a lot to me because my grammie co-signed for it (I make all the payments), and she's the only grandparent I've known and is moving to Georgia soon... so I'm really protective of my car. (sorry about the rant)
My point being... asking for a new bumper beccause of that is rediculous. I do also believe you may have the right to choose a place for an estimate as well, but my point in my rant about my door was.... I'm not asking for a new door because of something that small and fixable... it's rediculous for him to say he ""needs" a new bumper because of some damage that small. I'm assuming the car isn't that new? if it's not that new, the plastic may have been aging and already cracked.... who knows?
I'm going to stop posting now... I need a nap lol. Good luck
Fallen is right. I should have also meantioned that he definately does not need a new bumper. Even if it does have a little crack in it.
And she is right. You do have a choice in where you bring the car for estimates. He can go to as many shops as he wants and show you
all the estimates. But you also have a choice in where he goes.
Alright. I decided to go through insurance. I already talked to them and they said that the prices are too high and that they will fight that I did not cause the crack which I don't think is even possible (me causing the crack).
Anyway ill ask him for a copy of the estimates tommorow. He also sounded really nervous when I said i'm going through my insurance.
MSRP on a SHO rear bumper is $671.20
I don't care if MSRP on that bumper is a million dollars, it isn't needed to be replaced. simple as that. sounds to me like a cheap azz SHO owner trying to take advantage of your insurance money to mod his car, or repair other things, or pocket it. I HATE to stereotype and act brand hating or anything stupid like that... but I have seen too many SHO owners being stuck up stupid high school kids who bought it because it was the quickest thing $700 bucks could buy him, and now he thinks its a million dollar race car... cuz for the love of god ya'll it IS a Super High Output Yamaha motor!!!! like OMG! go through your insurance, make him sweat, let them fight it, let him get away with a check for a bottle of touch up paint and a kiss on the cheek from your insurance adjuster and just laugh at him when he blows his fancy SHO motor while he tries to race all his buddies.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Hitting him at 10mph probably wouldn't cause a crack in his rear bumper, and no he doesn't need a new one. He's just trying to take advantage of the situation.
I hate people like that. Minor things should just be let go. For instance about 3 weeks ago when I was pulling out of my apartment complex, a neighbor thought I was going to go before i did, and rear ended me. I got out, looked at the damage, saw 2 little dents, one to the right of the liscense plate, and one underneath. I looked at it and said "if thats all it is, then I'm just going to let it go. Don't worry about it." The damge is there, but you have to look for it, and no what you are looking for to see it. Sure I could of gotten a free bumper out of it, but why deal with the hassle for 2 very minor imperfections? Also figured I didn't want to make an instant enemy at an apartment complex I've only been at for 4 months. Some people really could learn the same stuff.

I partially agree with you... some instances should be let go I think. But I do think there are some people who shouldn't be "let go".
I shall further explain my door incident.
Last Thursday I was sitting in my car texting during my 3 hour break between classes. This kid walks to his car (which is parked right next to me but facing the other direction on my drivers side). He flings his door open, and it takes a nice chunk of paint out of my door. Now had he acted concerned I may have let it go or at least worked with him... but he didn't. He looks at me and in the most cocky arrogant voice says "Sorry". I look down to see if there's any damage, and see the nice chunk of paint missing from my door. No sooner than I seen this, I look up and he's gone.
This was completely stupid on his part... I got a good look at his face, what kind of car he drove, but couldn't turn around quick enough to get his tag... but he goes to my college!! I filed a police report with the local police department, and campus security... then yesterday I seen the bugger leaving and driving right by me. So I chase him down (without being too obvious), get his tag, and go by him again to get another look at his face to make sure it was him... and sure enough it was.
The damage isn't bad or anything, but I have to look at it every time I get in the car, and it is highly noticable. Had he done the right thing I may have let it go. But his arrogant attitude and lack of concern or taking responsibility for his mistake really irritated me. Could you call it petty? Probably... maybe I'm just sick of letting people get away with crap, who knows?
I think it depends on the situation. At any rate... that dude does NOT need a new bumper. That would be like me saying "oh you took a paint chip out of my door... even though my door itself is fine, I need a new door"
Might not need a new bumper COVER, but the crash pad and crash bar under neither (the foam pad and reinforcement bar) might need to be replaced...... Depending on the State, it could be law that they be replaced, even after such minor impacts.

I understand that though. If someone's just going to **** up your car and walk away from it then its a different situation then what I was in. I'd react the same way and let the law deal with it, probably screw him out of more money than the damage is actually worth if he didn't have the decency to at least confront me about it

I believe it i needed a rear bumper for my 1990 T-bird SC before it was stolen and found out they don't make the SC specific rear bumpers anymore.
And t-bird owners know it so it's a sellers market. you think $700 is rough try douchebags bending you over for $1000 for a bumper cover only.
Since it looks like an older SHO I believe it 100% that the bumper estimates are that high.
But, um, That's just a baby scrach and he doesn't need a brand new bumper to fix that. if a body shop charges more than $300 tops to set,
fill, and paint that little gash then they must be the dumbest body shops in your town...or possibly the smartest. Either way sounds like you
did the right thing.

2 sides to every coin here. I just got lightly rear ended, while driving my minivan, by a teenaged girl in her dads car and damage to both cars are scuffs and in my case a tear in the bumper. Now the picture does look as if the damage is "livaeble" and yeah he could prolly leave it. But, why should he? All brand bashing aside, why should anyone who gets nailed even lightly have to settle with leaving their car marked in any way. I don't doubt the bumper cost that as my estimates hover around $1000 with parts, labour and paint. If the bumper is cracked underneath and or if the crush guard or metal structure is damaged, then that would justify getting it fixed. Not taking sides here but, there are definitely 2 perspectives here. Not mention the time and hassle of going around getting estimates etc...
Basically if you put it through insurance, you might be getting yourself into trouble because you're going to pay more because of the claim.
- Ask to see the estimates from all shops, even better is to get photocopies.
- Ask them to go to a Ford Dealership and get the estimate faxed to you.
Call the body shops and ask if there is any possibility that the problems they found are old ones. If they say yes, Offer the person you hit the $200 or say you'll meet them in court for litigation.
Put it off for two years and he can't do @!#$ all about it
I rear ended a lady in a truck. Not a single scratch on her truck, my whole front fascia was blown to pieces. She said she went to the shop and they said there was frame damage and it would cost me $500 to fix. After she told me that I never bothered to call her and she never bothered to call me back. So now its 2 years later and she can't do anything about it

I'm with uflip06... you were at fault, you rear-ended him. Why should he have to live with the damage? Sure his estimates are a little high, but you don't even know why they're what they are yet. Wait til you find out what body work is going to cost before you go all nutso...
If you rear-ended me and split my bumper... damn straight you'd be buying me a new one
...j
Also see if he knows someone at those shops he got an estimate at they may be trying to add something extra on there. Seems a bit much for a scrape. I myself rear ended a guy at about 5 mph the car was a newer toyota he got out looked at it had one scratch my paint spider webbed due to a crappy paint job and that was that. He said not to worry about it and went on from there. I thanked him and that was that. Like everyone said get copies of the quotes.
