annoying squeaking sound

hey guys,

Ive had this really obnoxious high pitch squeaking/squealing sound in my 98 cav for a while. someone told me it was a belt, but i had it replaced and i still get the noise..no one seems to know what it is, and I would LOVE to get it fixed. cant go anywhere without people turning heads..hah..anyways if you are standing in front of the car with the hood open it sounds as if its coming from the left corner closest to you. i recorded what it sounds like..its kind of a @!#$ty recording..but I think you may get the idea..seems like its a common problem with cav's..being that i've heard it on others...here is the .wav...just click on the link below

squeaky noise sound

if you listen closely, you can kind of hear the really high pitch sound...the recording didnt quite get it...

if anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it!!!

The bearing on my alternator (99 Z24) was going out and it made a high pitched whirring noise. I pinpointed the noise to the bearing using a mechanic's stethoscope. Good tool to add to your tool box.

Taking the alternator out isn't very hard, 3 bolts and remove the belt, disconnect the plug in and the one red wire. Make sure you're battery is disconnected first. Installation is opposite of removal. Its easy is you know what you're doing.

Yeah, that sounds like bearings from the alternator. You could also check the A/C compressor, the clutch might be going slowly bad. When it gets bad, it makes a little bit different noise.

My first thought was the alternator pully when I heard that, but then I read you had it replaced not too long ago and the sound was happening before then. Given that, it could be the belt tensioner. Also, isn't the powersteering driven by the belt on a 98? If so, it might be that too.

just take off your belt and spin the a/c pulley, in most cases if that is whats bad it will make noise by you spinning it. if you have the 2.2/2200 you can just go get a belt for a non a/c car

i turned the a/c on and it was still making that noise...someone suggested that it could possibly be the water pump making that noise..cause it could be going out. that was the suggestion because i have to put anticoolant in it to keep the car from overheating more often then i have had to before...think it could be the water pump making this noise and needs replaced? also is it held by the timing belt in 98 cav's? its a 2.2. thanks
