Ecotec Oil Filter Cap O-ring

The Repair guide suggests you replace the o-ring on the cap to the oil fillter compartment every oil change. I've done a couple of oil changes and haven't replaced it yet. Does anyone actually do this? Where can you buy them?

you can get the filters form the part stores as just the filter, or as the filter with the housing.

me personally no I don't change the house. I change oil in my cavs every 2,000 miles both have 25-30K miles and neither has ever had the housing changed.

If you crack it or it starts to leak replace it, otherwise don't waist your money

Yeah, I don't think we've ever replaced one of these o-rings at work, not even once. Definitely inspect it each time and look for cracks, small tears or other general imperfections that common sense would suggest may cause a problem. If you see something out of the ordinary, change it, otherwise, slap 'er back in.

I must admit though, it is kind of odd that these filters all do not come with replacement gaskets. Every other canister-style filter that I have ever worked with always includes a replacement (Ford diesels, VWs, Lexus', Jaguars, Mercedes', Smarts, older Chevys, etc, etc...). Some even have 2, 3, 4 and up to 5 that need to be replaced.

Either way, your original will be good for a long time.
