whirring noise when shut off the car

i have a 98 Z24 (2.4L LD9) and when you shut the engine off there is a funny whirring noise that continues for a second or three after the engine stops spinning. it isnt a fan. It sounds like something attached to the engine, but it keeps spinning after the engine stops... and just slowly comes to a stop on its own...

i cut the spark, and just cranked the engine.... and it still does it... quieter... but it is still there.

Yeah i get it to but i have an eco. It kinda sounds mechanical not electrical if were talking about the same sound.

nope.... a fan would continue to run full speed and then shut off, and spin down quickly....

this is very slow and more whirry almost grind-y

no wooshing of a fan at all...

as soon as the engine stops, this noise begins to slow down..... but slows down slowly.... and whir's the entire time... different sound than a fan makes.... i also have a 2002 cavy Z24.... and my buddy has two 97 cavys..... and none of them make this noise....

if this was an older rear wheel drive car.... with the engine powered fan..... i would maybe suspect the fan clutch... but as these all have electric fans... that is different.

yes, exactly... more "metalic" sounding.... almost like the sound of spinning your tire when the car is jacked up...

more "bearing" sounding...

what year is your eco? i kinda suspected tranny.... maybe like a torque converter or soemthing???

alright well tomorrow i will go out and disconnect the fan and try this again..... i doesnt sound like a fan to me AT ALL... but maybe it is just a fan with a cooked bearing and that is why it is so loud and grindey...

i think it is mechanical..... but i would love if it was just a fan.

Once your engine stops nothing attached to it can continue to spin. It would have to be something external to the engine or accesory drive.

yeah.... exactly.... which is why i am so confused by this... it would have to be something powered by the engine, but not directly linked to it... if spun by a belt or gears etc... it would be slowed and stopped by the engine as well... this obviously spins with the engine while running, but spins down independant of the engine....

so yes it COULD be a fan.... just didnt sound like it was a fan, and defiantely didnt seem to be coming from the front of the engine bay...

sounded like it was coming from the engine itself.... but easy enough to verify.

but wait.... if it was the fan..... wouldnt it come on with the key? like wouldnt need the engine spinning to spin up?

at least this only seems to happen after the engine itself was spinning...

and doenst need to be for long.... like i can fire it up, and shut it right back down and still get the whirring. so it isnt like "the fan doesnt kick on till the engine warms up"

again.... i will verify in the am.... but i really doubt it is that simple.

It couldn't be the starter not disengaging properly and still hitting the flywheel somehow? I dunno, I'm just throwing this out there lol

that thought crossed my mind as well....

but then got thinking about it.... and if the gear was stuck in the start position, it would be on the flywheel.... which would means it would be slowed down by the flywheel too.... unless it engages when you start the car, but for whatever reason isnt able to diengage until the engine stops spinning....

so again, this is possible... but unlikely.
