Hey. I own a 2000 sunfire, 2.2l. I just started getting this noise in my car. I just replaced two of my front wheelbearings so i don't believe that that is the noise and also doesn't seem like it. When I make a turn to the left and and and accelerate it's the worst noise grinding and clunking noise ever. If i let off the gas there's no noise at all. So I am guessing it's something to do with the axle? When I turn to the right their is not noise at all everything is fine that way. I also here a little clunk noise when i go slow over bumps and seems to be coming from the driver side also. What could this be?
Thanks
sounds like the axle isnt in the trans correctly.
something to check, but could be something else as well......if the noise stops when you let off the gas, it sounds to be more trans related.
ya, but i never had any of that apart or nothing so I can't see that being a issue. I also noticed today. when the tire is on the ground and if i grab the top of the wheel and shake it back and forths their is a bit of movement. Feels like something is wore? What could cause this movement? Thank you
did you actually torque the axle bolt to the exact specs of the replacement hub when you did the wheel bearings?
if you tighten it too tight or too loose, you can self destruct a brand new bearing in a week or 2.
I originally had the exact same thing... replaced my passenger side bearing... didnt have a socket for the nut to use my torque wrench... so just used a cresent wrench and stopped when it "felt about right" got in it and drove...
a week or 2 later i noticed the same thing all over again.... thought to myself "damn it, i knew i should have replaced them both at the same time" so pulled apart the other side, and to my shock it was just fine... scratched my head.. went back to my new bearing... and it was cooked!
thank goodness for warranty... took it back got a new one, got the right tools, torqued it properly, and it has held up like a champ since.
and my buddy said the EXACT same thing happened to him when i told him my story.... so i am willing to bet you are victim #3 of the "torque till it feels right killer"
pull your wheel and rotor back off, and i bet you will find your new hub is wobbly as hell.
thats also a very strong possibility
thanks. Ya i have thought that too, I believe that I have done it right. It doesn't sound like the typical wheelbearing noise. It's more rougher and louder. When I go over little bumps in the road it's a loud noise i can hear coming from the same side. Sounds like something really loose. almost like a jigglin noise. anyone no anything
Hey, just an update on my problem. I am went out and bought a cv axle today and put the new part in and same problem. This is really one of those noises that can really be a bugger.. Just to describe it again, It's only when I turn left and keep on the gas/ slow or fast doesn't matter. Or if i stop and really give it the gas i can hear it lightly. Grinding, clicking noise. Also when I put on the brakes I can feel it through the wheel like the soft grinding. Would strut mounts do this??? That's only this i'm thinking? When I replaced my axle checked the wheel bearing that seems fine. What else can i check?
Sounds to me you u got a tranny mount problem, I noticed Ive got something similar to that, No grinding though, Usually on a hard turn I can feel the rattle sound, Also do u have an auto or manual transmission?. I would just check to see if their is some play with that tranny mount. Use a long screw driver or pry bar to see if their is alot of movement in that area.
Good Luck keep us updated.
um did you check you brakes after doing the bearing? I've noticed if a wheel bearing gets to bad it'll wear the pads out on one end and not the other. also the only possible thing it could be if you grabe the tire at the top and bottom. Is wheel bearing, ball joint, maybe strut mount or you didn't get something tight.
ya i have check the brakes that all seems fine. The sound is hard to describe but it's between a rattle grinding noise if ya no what i mean. I just tryed something today. I stoped at light, and really stepped on the gas, the sound was there going straight it lasted up to 50 km's while i done this the car pulled to the left a good bit. what could cause this?
Pulling to the left while stomping the gas will just be the torque steer. The clunking noise you describe sounds like a strut mount that has gone. The loud grinding sound I have no idea on, my car is doing the exact same thing. I get a loud growling type noise when I am making left hand turns(50kph+), I also have some pretty serious vibrations while making these turns(80kph+). The change in my cup holder bounces around when I turn left. I will be pulling it all apart tomorrw to have a look and see what I can find.
Hey, just an update. I have looked at this up on a hoist and i still don't see the problem. I have really drove around this evening and see when the noise was their, and at what times. here's what I found out. When I am making a turn it's not there, when i start to accelerate out of the turn it's there. I only have to put my foot on the gas very lightly when i'm making a left turn to hear the noise. it's like a viberating noise/ grinding hard to explain it. Also if i stop and really give press the gas it's there also it lasts till the car shifts. it's a automatic. I'm thinking could it be a mount? But if it was a mount wouldn't i hear it either way i turn? Thanks
Hey guys, what kinda noise would i get if my passenger side strut mount is gone? Would I get a noise only when making right hand turns and while under hard acceleration. I also noticed that the noise is their more when i'm starting away from hills. Only for a short time then it leaves. Thanks alot
