I have a 2000 Cavalier z22 and i changed the oil in the transmission today.
Now, i know it can take 2 quarts but i can't find the dipstick. So i don't know how to check the level. My friend has a 97 and it has a dipstick...
For now, i just put 2 quarts in it.
Anybody know how to check the transmission fluid level on a 2000 manual cavalier?
Thanks!
There should be a fill plug roughly six inches above the drain plug.
Have the car on a lever surface and loosen the fill plug.
The fluid should reach the fill plug (if you put in 2 quarts, you may have some excess drain out because it takes 1.8)
If nothing drains out, feel around with your pinky finger or small screwdriver to make sure the fluid is close to the fill opening.
Add accordingly and you're done.

There is not a dipstick on these transmissions. I believe that there is a plug on the side that you can remove, so that you can stick your finger in to check the level - but if you put in a full 2 quarts it is already technically overfilled, so fluid would leak out when you open it.
I've run mine for a few years now filled with 2 quarts. As long as there are no visible leaks, you shouldn't really need to worry about checking the level. A fluid leak is the only way that the level will go down.
I've only seen maybe a handfull of manual transmissions that actually had dipsticks. Some new cars don't even have one for the engine oil! My friend's BMW is like that - maybe the dipstick would add too much to the cost

So is this plug accesible from looking over the engine or being under it? I can't find it.. :S

By "drain plug" you mean the bolt i removed under the transmission to drain the oil?
So to find this "fill plug", i should be under the car and feeling for a plug on the side of the transmission? And if so, which side? Is it a plug just like the drain plug?
I'm just trying to figure out what to look for and where to look for it cuz i can't find the damn thing...
Thanks!
Sorry about the double post, i don't know how to edit
That plug is on the drivers side, Just look behind the tire. Drain is on the rear of the tranny, closest to the firewall.

OK so i found it yesterday and pulled it. A little bit of oil came out. All good.
Thanks guys!
Sorry to bring up a old topic. I was going to change my Trans fluid yesterday & reading the manual thought hey this will be cake. Well I get under the car & could not find a obvious "Drain Plug" like the manual said. I found a few different things I think could be a plug, just don't want to go & remove the wrong thing. Is the drain plug the flush mount bolt on the back side of the trans, near the Axel Shaft ? Thanks for any help & a picture is worth a thousand words
The plug facing the firewall is the drain plug, if you remove, you remove all the fluid.
beliveve the level plug is above the driver side shaft i think its a 3/8 allen
