Does GM distribute thermostats for third gens w/ lower temps? if not who does?

Should be able to get a 160 at the parts store, but why?

thanks. if u really want to know. cuz i find the 180 is too hot for the 2200. the engine performs better when slightly cooler. gm threw in the same temp. thermostat for all the engines which is stupid. but im not gonna get into this. bottom line is i notice the engine runs a lot better all around when the temp is slightly below the neutral point. cheap performance mod

wow. while you're headed to the parts store, dont forget to stop at radio shack and pick up a resistor to splice into you iat.

??? if the engine's too cold, doesn't the ecu keep it in OPEN LOOP mode then? you'll just be wasting gasoline
unless you're having an underlying overheating problem like a small leak somewhere, or a bad water pump, or a clogged radiator
The engine will go into closed loop mode as soon as the O2 sensor is hot, regardless of coolant temp.
However, the 2200 is more efficient at 195 than at 160. There's no benefit to running a 160 degree thermostat. If your motor doesn't run well at 195, you've got other problems.

the only advantage to a colder thermostat is if your runnign boost to help keep your Knocks down your every day 2200 doesn't need it
i'm runnign a 180 in my 3800 it came with a 195, i'm accually putting a 180 drilled thermostat in over the winter. you have to becarfull some cars if you run a 160 it will through a code like the 3800s are that way engine didn't reach operating temp so you might accually cause a CEL when trying to make your car run better

Ok first as for the ECU not going into closed loop. It has a couple things it needs, motor temp is one, and O2 temp. Usually 100-105 degree (engine temp) and it goes into closed loop. Getting a 160 stat is not going to make the car run cooler. It will make it take longer to get to 195 degree's, but it is still going to run at the same temp. You can remove the stat and it will still run at the same temp, just take longer to get there.
