I have the 3spd auto. The fluid as 149,000 miles. Im going to change a portion of the fluid by dropping the pan. I have a few questions....
1. SInce i will be removing the pan again in another 3000 miles, can i skip the gasket and use RTV only until my final pan removal ? I would hate to spend the money on a new gasket every month or 2 for up to 6 tranny fluid changes. I have attached some photos of my fluid color (off the dipstick). its on a white paper towel to show the color. It really isnt that bad.
2. What kind of ATF do i use? just DexronIII? or is it special like my honda (takes Honda ZF-1 or Royal Purple MAX ATF). No i will not be using RP ATF in the cavalier.
I think thats it...
Thoughts?
P.S. Oh yeah, forgot about the pix...

You could use the RTV , but just keep an eye on it.
yeah the filter comes with a new gasket but alot of the GM ones are reusable, if its original. how come you are dropping the pan in another 3k? Do NOT use RTV. it will mix with the fluid, With bad results. (its happened) As for Question 2, Dexron III is recommended, nothin special. and, as long as we are on the subject, when i did mine (pan drop and filter) it took around 6 quarts, maybe just a bit more. hope it helps.

Ill be dropping the pan 6x because my fluid is black and im guessing to get it back to red (slowly) ill have to do like i did with my lexus, do a pan drop every oil change for 4 or 5 (maybe 6) oil changes.

Actually u can eliminate those extras trans changes and pour one can of SEAFOAMS trans flush in and make it done on ur next change. They sell it at advance auto and auto zone prolly 9.00 but worth it!This would eliminate wasted time and money etc by using one can of this which is just as great as the normal seafoam which u use in ur fuel and oil.Do not get the 2 confused the trans stuff by seafoam is clearly labeled! just a suggestion.Yes I have used it in my 85 cav 4spd manual and works great.
I wouldnt say I would drop mine 6 times, but I wouldnt flush mine ethier. Keep in mind it does not need to be totally red. It works like engine oil, where you drain the black oil, pour in nice new golden oil, and once you look at the dipstick, its a lil more brown. Some contaninated fluid will remain, no matter what, but it should be fine after one, maybe two pan drops.
