Hello to all. My stepdaughter has a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire with the Ecotec 2.2 ohc. She started it the other day and the temp guage continued to rise beyond the point where it usually runs. The radiator and hose was still cold, reservoir level correct and no sign of leaks. I have done quite a bit of auto repairs in my 57 years and seems to me to be thermostat stuck closed.
We have new thermostat and a Haynes book that goes through 2004. Well, the thermostat housing/ heater hose box is not the same on the 2005 as it is on the 2004. Did they move the thermostat from the rad hose side to the water pump tube side? If so, does the tube slide back into the water pump housing after removing the 2 flange bolts on the thermostat housing? Also, does this cooling system have bleed nipples to remove air when refilling fluid? If so, where are they?
Thank you for any help with these questions.
Hi, the thermostat is located at the water pump outlet pipe. The water pump is located at the back passenger side of the engine under the exhaust manifold. It is recommended that you remove the exhaust manifold to service the thermostat. Before changing the thermostat you may want to check the ECT sensor.
