I've always greased the lobes and journals, wrapped them in something to protect them on a shelf (like newspaper or a suitable close fitting box), and put them up where they won't be knocked around. The orientation isn't critical, but of course don't stack stuff on top of them. I've read of people making tubes out of PVC pipe, sealing the ends and filling them with oil. I haven't done that, but I'm sure it would keep them indefinitely.

Incidently, if you're going to have it apart anyway, consider doing the timing set, water pump and a header at the same time.

Chassis grease is fine. (You're going to clean them spotless before you install them anyway.) I haven't had any problems laying them flat. (Their mass is a fraction of what a typical crankshaft is.)

Here's another plug for a couple of concurrent mods. The combination of secret cams, a header, high-flow cat, and at least removing the (intake) tuner tube brings a very noticable overall change for not a huge amount of money. I recommend them.

The tuner tube (2.4 only) is in the stock intake system (as a silencer). If you've gone to an aftermarket intake, it's gone already.

this is just a thought if you havent already done it.. a buddy of mine a few yrs back got a set of HKS cams for his turbo DSM and what he did was wrapped them in a thick celophane (sp?) with oil filled inside.. he ended storing them that way for almost a yr, but they were perfect when they emerged for the install
