Damn it Bobby, The blower motor is going out...
Tuesday, February 24, 2009 9:54 AM
Oh wow...I got a REALLY bad growling noise coming from the blower motor in my 96 2.2. Started awhile ago, but recently gotten worse. The time has come, for blower motor replacement. I have done it on some cars, and it has been a GIANT pain in the ass. On my ZX-2, removal of the dash...COMPLETELY...was required. I see from searching that this is not the case with the cavalier thank God. Does anyone have a DIY or pix of any of this process? Im in the process of finding a blower motor right now, dont want a used one, but dont want to buy one from a dealer either. If i have to get a used one, I will. Meanwhile, It is still working on all speeds, it is just incredibly annoying. Will it hurt anything to just let it go till it doesnt work anymore? Never has on any car I have ever heard of, but these might be different.

PS: When I do get around to this task, I will be sure to take Pix and do a How-To so it canned be pinned in this forum.

Thanks in advance for your response,

Josh.

Autozone has it for $42.99...Is this a decent price?

Is that what it looks like?

There's probably just leaves and twigs floating around in the blower making the noise, as the air inlet is not really filtered.

Stick your head down under the glove box look up and you'll see the big round thing is the bottom of the blower. There should be 3 screws and a wire clip. Pull it out dump out the junk and maybe give it a couple shots with the air compressor and try it again, before you go spending money on a new blower. Then you can also verify yourself your getting the right part and if you actually need it.

Good Luck

ewwwwww.....

The motor isn't bad to get at. I cut a small piece of the black firewall mat out to better reach the rear screw. Thats my only advice, as I have had mine out for two resistors and one debris removal.

My 88' had a mouse hit the fan.....it was kind of a mess in there.

I totally agree with cutting a small section of the black mat, it also helps if you use a 1/4' swivel to reach in there!

The motors don't usually tend to go by making tons of noise, usually the brushes will wear and it will gradually stop working. The noise isssue is probly the debris everyone else is mentioning. Once i had a plastic cigarette wrapper in there and it drove me crazy for about a month LOL, took less than 10 minutes to fix.

Lmao, squirrels had sex in your Air box, that must have been exhilarating... Bow chicka bow wow!

LOL I'm still trying to find out how a couple squirrels got in there All I found in mine was a dead mouse, soaked in engine oil.

Back on topic... any progress on the blower yet?

Yeah. I took it out and cleaned it. Its better but i can still hear it. There wasnt anything big in there, just a bunch of dust. I dont know what it could be, the fan itself was in tight, i didnt really see any way to tightnen it down.

Its weird tho, i left it unscrewed, plugged it in and turned it on, and it was dead silent. I screwed it back up and turned it on again, noise is back, just not as loud as previously.

hmm.
