Stuck in 3rd gear
Sunday, May 03, 2009 6:03 PM
So I was driving the cav home today. I went to put it in 2nd gear. And it reved really high. And there was no power. Then I got going again. and realized the car was in 3rd gear.

Now it will freely move up and down. But not engage any gears. It also will not move left and right.

Help please. I belive It could be linkage, but im not sure how to check this.

Someone please. Iwould like to get it moving by tomorrow if possible. Also when I move the shifter around you can see the cable in the engine bay no longer has the rubber sheath on the end, about 2 or 3 inches. Not sure if that could be the issue

Yeah. Figured out the problem. The shifter cable is broken. Now I just need to find one for a decent price.

only place you're going to get them is the dealer, it comes with both cables for roughly $130.

I know someone on here said in another post that there is no reason to ever put a used shift cable in a car but when you lose your job and the only thing you have has a busted shift cable,ya gotta do what ya gotta do and I got one at the local you pull it yard for $5 yuh five dollars.Been on there for about 500 miles so far and no problems.I will be ordering a new pair though when I have the funds.Just a thought for ya though if you are strapped for cash. Btw.Easiest way to replace that I found is disconnect from the trans, pull the carpet up on the passenger side, remove the center console there are 2 bolts in the center under the arm rest and 1 in the crap holder under the radio and HVAC controls and it has a lil plastic plate over it,remove the plastic box under the dash it has 2 torx screws on each side and splits in the middle, pop the shift cable off inside, the cable runs under an air duct and it's pretty tight,I used a pry bar to kinda hold it up out of the way, give it a yank by the firewall and the grommet will pop out and pull the cable into the car and up under the HVAC hose, reverse for install.Hope it helps.
