I was flashing my High Beams to pass on the highway becasue some idiot was goin 58 in a 65 in the Left lane. When I looked down my DRL's were flashing and I had no DRL's except the parkinglight in the turn signals, they were on.
I had no low;s either. I trun the car off then I restart and the DRL's are not flashing and are working and I have Low beams. WHen I turn on the HB's they dont work and my DRL's start to flash. Same problem no low either. Turn the car off again and restart and the same procedure occurs.
I checked the fuses. THe bulbs can't be both burned out when the DRL's work.
Anyone know where the relay in the dash by the cluster is located and can this problem be the relay behind the dash.
I pulled out the relay in the fuse box. Started the car and the lights working fine. Then I put the HB's on and they were on for abrief second then they flased fron left to right while the DRL ligh flashed with the HB light on the dash. Then just the Left HB was on and then they both went off. Low beams and parking lihgts are fine.
No HB's and my HB indcator in the dash does not light up.
I suspect the relay in the fuse box.
Any ideas?
Have you disabled the DRLs yet?
If you don't, they see the HID ballasts as 'no bulb' and flash five times as a warning, normally to warn the driver to replace blown bulbs.
Search for "all years DRL disable and other headlight tricks". And pray to god you don't have my electrical system.
But I don't have a blown bulb. It keeps blinking more than 5 times, it never stops till I shut the car off.
Waht happened to your system?
I can't remember if it stops blinking or not, only happened to me while I was installing mine.
(The story with my system is that I can't disable DRLs though everyone else can)
Regardless, if you only have HIDs, the car is going to see it as a burnt out bulb, simply because it's expecting to see a filament bulb and if it doesn't it goes nuts.
I don't have HID's. Stock lights.
Ahh, missed that entirely
I would still suspect that one of your brights is burned out.
I realize that the DRLs are on the same bulb and that they work, but the high beams run on a second filament IIRC.
(They do the flashing deal when only one bulb is powered up.)
Assuming this is on the 97 listed in your registry... if not, let me know what car you're working on.
The high beams are a single filament, just like the low beams. DRL's are the two high beam bulbs connected in series, so they each see ~6 volts across them... reduced voltage = reduced light output. bradsk88 is talking about the 2000+ system.. the Body Control Module will flash the DRL indicator a few times then throw a Service light... but not so on the pre-2000 cars.
I suspect it's either that relay you're talking about... or it's the headlight switch itself with a poor connection. I'd replace the relay first (grab a matching one from a wrecker... cheaper than new!) to start with...
It's a 98 Sunfire. FOrgot to mention that. That's what I plan on doing MOnday.
Did not have a chance to replace the relay. It seems that I have DRL and I have low beams. When I hit the HB the HB indicator does not light up and the DRL are on instead of the HB'S?
Then I would suspect it is the switch after all.
There are several things you could check, if you have access to a multimeter and are willing to take apart the top of the steering column (which you have to do anyway, if you replace the switch...). I can try and find a schematic for you, if you like... just let me know.
Sounds like a wiring issue same as i had with my car. 450 god damn dollars later i have a retarded wire with 10 spices in it running my DRL/high beam. Thanks to some hackedy shop those little SOBS.
on these cars, the orange wire has power all the time, low beam/drl being a dark blue wire(or tan in some models dunno why), and pink as high beam acts as a switched ground. so when you flick the switch inside your car, the grounds complete the circuit to make your headlights change. take out your headlights ( 2 x 13 mm bolts) lift up and pull towards you. see if you have power with a test light on the orange wire ( if you have one headlight beam ignore step). Now, put the "ground" part of the test light on something with POWER ie battery terminal. stick test light lead into the blue wire for your low beam to see if you have a complete circuit. if not, you may have to pull the connections apart(taped and soldered from the factory in the wiring harness for the headlights) and test each section to find the break. or you may have to run a wire from inside from the switch DIRECTLY to the headlights.
Yea. Have fun.
also, take the steering column apart, remove the switch and test with a multimeter on the connections where the blue wire and orange wire are.
Tried a new HD bulb. Tried a new DRL relay. Tried a new TS swithc. None of these are the problem. I guess it is the freakin relay in the dash.
Where in the dash is the Headlight Relay located, upper or lower part.
The relay is on the front bumper. ANyone know where th module for the headlight is in the dash?
Today while driving I turned the lights on and off a few times. I had DRL and Low beams, when I hit the HB the DRL come on. After a few more time the DRL indicator started to blink. Then I turned the LB on and the DRL indicator was off. Then I hit the HB and the DRL indicator was flashing and I had no HB, and no DRL. Shut the car off and restarted later and no more flashing DRL and the HB don't work but the DRL come on when I hit the HB switch.
It is either the relay or the module. ANyone have any ideas?
