Ok I need to ask this question...
I was driving along and I noticed at idle the oil light came on. After 1100 rpm the light goes off. Didn't think much of it. Heard what sounded like a slight knock at 3500 rpm and it gradually got to be 2500 rpm knocking. Got to a parts store and checked oil. Full oil. Pulled out of that parking lot and the car poured white smoke out the exhaust. So much white smoke I could not see the road in the rearview then the engine stopped. This all happened within 5 minutes...
It now just slowly turns over, but will not start. Lot of oil in the intake, puddled up in throttle body. My question is.. What are my options? What went wrong? Car is a 97 Z24 auto. LD9, 117,000 miles

White smoke sounds like engine coolant. You might have lost a head gasket. Is there any coolant left in the overflow bottle? Any evidence of coolant in the oil (milky lookiing)? Might be time for a compression check.
Coolant is full. Oil is dark brown.

Ok judging by what sounds to be lower end knock.. And reading around. I'm gonna take a stab and say, oil pump failed and the rod bearings are bad...
New motor on the way =]

http://www.obd-codes.com/p0420 I pulled 2 of those codes with a reader. So I cleared those codes and the car started right up and runs but still has a knock. seems to be upper....
Safest bet to replace the motor or is there something that can be done without tearing it out or pulling everything apart? is it the valves or retarded timing? can prolly get to loading up a video later
