I have a 98 z24. Ive replaced the engine already because of a thrown rod bearing. After about 20 thousand on the new motor a knocking started. Its not the motor. You can rev it up in park/neutral with no knock. Its when your driving. You can hold the brake and put it in drive with no noise. The trans is smooth i replaced both wheel bearings and the right cv axle. It seems like its coming from the right side. A mechanic told me it could be the timinig chain. But i dont thinks so i would think you would be able to hear it in park. Should i replace the left cv axle. PLEASE HELP im stumped
Hi,
Tell us more,
When does the noise occur?
What speed?
What driving conditions?
Turning? left? right?
Braking? Hard or gently?
Under acceleration?
Under de acceleration?
Cruising at a steady smooth speed?
Lower gears?
Higher gears?
During shifting?
Weather affect it? Rain, dry, hot, cold, humid, arid ????
Oh, so much information is needed to even take a stab at this via Keyboard!
Different noises happen under different driving situations and their related stresses. Some you will NOT duplicate by simply reving the engine with your foot on the brake.

Probably is the cv axle. It will snap/knock when it's loaded or unloaded hard if its bad. Coast up hill and get on it a little, it will probably knock. Turn hard and get on it at low speed. Be mindful of your revs so you can hear the knock over the engine still.
