Well here's my situation.
Picked up a 01 Z24 to use as my daily driver. Has 213,000 kilos (yeah I know but for $600 bucks I thought I'd take a gamble).
I am getting a noise which initially sounded like an exhaust manifold issue.
However now it sounds more like a tick coming from the timing belt cover area or more like a slap slap slap.
My Mechanic put 1/2 litre of transmission oil in the crankcase which he said should release something or another (
don't remember what) but the problem is still their.
The car runs great over 1000 rpm; Below that and at idle it starts up again.
Sometime when I turn the steering wheel it temporarily goes away. But the way the steering is unusually tight. As this is my first Chev I am not sure if this is normal.
I am thinking to taking it to the dealer to get a diagnosis but I'm sure they will still stick me with a diagnosis charge.
Any & all suggestions greatly appreciated.
First thing.... you have a timing chain not a belt.... and if the tensioner or guides go out... it can and most likely will make noise (not sure thats your pob or not though)
As for the steering thing.... these cars dont have luxury power steering like some cars its firmer... but shouldnt be hard to turn by any means.... but if your used to something like a toyota that has awsome power steering.... this car will feel stiff to you.
Check your belt tensioner pully and go from there..... but I really cant help much because I cant hear it....
Also.... what did said mechanic put in your engine? what do you mean by transmission oil? You probably want to change your oil... you should never put anything other than motor oil in an engine other than oil flush if your flushing it for some reason...

Thanks for the Correction... chain not belt
Will have my buddy check belt tensioner
He did put transmission oil in. He said the sometime their is clog & oil doesnt get to the top of the engine. The transmission oil acts like a detergent & remove that issue. It was only 1/2 litre... will change the oil though.
Any online service manuals exist for these cars?
Had the chance to investigate my issue a bit more.
My mechanic & I decided to tcheaper) before wry another route (e go the timing chain route.
We decided on changing the "oil bypass valve", use a OEM filter, and a semi-syn Blend of oil.
The filter on the car is a Motormaster piece of crap that does'nt have the anti-drain back the is needed to
maintain pressure & send oil to the top of the engine. As the car has a few miles on we decided on a synthetic-blend
to reduce the chance of leaks, but offers better lubrication & flow.
The Bypass valve ($18) was a special order so it will take a few days; A/C Delco PF44 ($12)
If it works I'll post.
fingers XX
Got my problem licked.
It was the Timing chain tensioner making all that rackus.
Got a new kit (chain, tensioner, sprokets - $265), new gasket, and a water- Pump ($100)
now I all golden.
