My son has a 1996 sunfire 2.4, 5 speed manual. He went to shift out of first and the shifter moves freely around and won't go into gear. It stays in first. You can shift it into other gears under the hood though. I had someone look at the linkage under the hood and in the console and they both look fine. Could this be a broken cable? If so where can I purchase one. Any other suggestions?

i would say its the shift cables they come apart its a common problem. Not too hard to replace take out the center console and move the heater tube if you can it will make it much easier and then its simple in and out from there.
