So my car is a 95 sunfire 2.2 5 speed. and it idles high at about 1100 when stationary and about 1500 when moving. i just replaced the IAC with no such luck..ive checked for vacuum leaks and cant find any. which sensor should i look at next? i was thinking MAP or TPS.but i dont know.thanks.
Disconnect the TPS. If the idle drops, leave it disconnected and shut the car off. Unhook the battery for about an hour. Reconnect the sensor, reconnect the battery and see if that fixes it. This happened on my 2.4L so I don't know if it will work on your 2.2L but I think the PCM get's messed up and this helps it to relearn something to fix the idle. I had replaced the TPS and it didn't fix it.
I actually did unplug both sensors while the car was running. The TPS didnt seem to make a difference. But with the MAP sensor unplugged the car seemed to rev more quickly and easily and it sounded better doing it too. any idea?
Unplugging any of the sensors does not result in an idle drop..Im really stumped on this. I also just got a new MAP sensor which did nothing. I dont think its the TPS though because doesnt that control my shift light(5 speed)? which comes on at about 2k rpm. or is it supposed to be a different rpm? please help! thanks!
My next guess would be a vacuum leak. Check the hoses and see if any are cracked or not seated correctly.
i believe it is what i had and fixed.. most high idle problems usually can't be truly fixed by resetting the pcm. it is a vacuum leak but in a odd area.. around the throttle(liek yoru actually hitting it).. try this.. take the inlet breather hose off. and put your hand over the intake.. if it cuts off you don't have a vacuum leak else where.. now cover the idle air inlet port.. the car lowers the rpm but does not stall the throttle body shaft is bent.. making the throttle open at ~4%.
another thing you can do first is goto autozone and see ifyou can get one of their computers (or a fiends) and see what the throttle % is showing.. if it is>2-3 % you might have the problem i am describing...
one disclaimer is mine was a 2.4 LD9, read my previous posts

The engine does stall with my hand over the inlet or thumb over the idle air port. Im really doubting that my throttle shaft is bent at all. How could that happen? Advance wouldnt read my TPS sensor for me. I dont know what else there is to check..
Haha. The dealer..thats funny. This might be somewhat off topic but does the vehicle speed sensor have anything to do with the idle?
I have no clue, but How is the state of your battery? Because for the last few months I have had very high Idle when sitting. I would start my car and I would be around 1300-1500 RPMS.... and thats high cuz you started my car and it sounded like it was reving, but i didnt pay much attention to it. WEll, the other day I had my battery tested, And it failed the test. 440CCA out of 700CCA, and 12.27 out of 12.6 V plus it was 7 years old lol. but anywho I put the new battery in and now when i start my car I stay around 800 Rpm, so mayby the battery is putting to much strain on the charging system?
Its a very good theory...But i bought the car with the idle problem. At that time it had an old battery in it that couldnt hold a charge for more than a day. So about April i think? I put a new, well "refurbished" battery in it. Because i was tight on money and needed the car. And the battery has worked great for me, never leaving me stranded. Any other thoughts? Thanks!
I had this problem too. Let just add when I was driving and when I pressed the clutch it would idle at 1500. It was like this four about 7 months n couldn't figure it. Then it started to misfie in cylinder 4 but it couldn't figure it out because it injected well to me fuel fine. Took it @!#$n dealer and told me that injector was injecting to much fuel so I replace it and not its fine idles at 900 to 1000. I don't know could b that.
