2003 Sunfire - Battery size and type?
Sunday, December 27, 2009 1:56 PM
What is the appropriate type/size of battery, eg. GPxx or GRxx, CCA xxx? Just by looking at the OEM battery, I can't see if it has the designation labeled anywhere on it.

How long does the stock battery generally last?

3 yrs? Then I guess mine didn't do too badly after all, at least for a stock battery.

Something else that bears mentioning, depending on what kind of battery you get and the climate you live in etc might want to keep an eye on the battery occasionally certain batteries will vent acid out the sides of the battery which can go down and rust your battery tray out. Also if the acid gets down below the battery tray, there is wiring and stuff down in there that can get messed up if acid gets on it. I'm on my third battery from Wallyworld, because the first 2 started venting acid can guarantee you it'll be the last battery i ever buy from walmart. Some people may have had good luck with walmart batteries i haven't been as fortunate, 2 ever starts and one maxx battery later i finally got one that isn't leaking too bad but i think next time i will go somewhere else.

i just pulled the battery out of the car i just bought as it died on me... realized it was 6 years old when i pulled it.. yet still started the car up everyday for a week..

Im just using a cheap motomaster 72 from canadian tire now.. havent had any problems with them in the past, plus they come with replacement and roadside assistance..

Well I have very good luck with batteries here.I replaced my duralast gold for my pu after 8.5 yrs of service in 08.It was nothing short of kick azz.My battery for the cav bit the dust this wk after 9 yrs and is just dead due to age.My wifes battery started to die last wk (the battery drama so lately) but was the factory for her 04 accord slow cranking and the green eye went black so replaced it with a duralast gold (3 yr free replacement).I realize some brands are not available everywhere and you have to go with your stores choices in your area.I highly recommend autozone, advance auto parts,or walmarts everstart they do rate those in the top ten in quality etc.By the way the cavs batt was a sears diehard gold never any issues with it.

i've never had a walmart battery that didn't start venting acid out the sides of the battery on me, so i won't be buying another wallyworld battery. As for autozone i've thought about trying them, we've had sears diehard batteries in the past as well and they seemed to be pretty reliable as well.

Another Battery i've heard good things about is Interstate, Anyone ever tried an interstate battery are they pretty solid as far as batteries go?

My grandfather got I think 5 years out of the original battery, then 7 out of the replacement, just got a brand new DieHard Gold (Interstate) this past spring, 700CCA. My parents expedition got 6 years out of the original battery, replaced with a Diehard Platinum II (Interstate) 900CCA, man I tell you that thing can CRANK. It cranks faster in sub zero weather than the old battery ever did in the middle of summer. The Diehard in my cav works great so far.

I've had an interstate in my LS since I had it and only had about three or four slow cranks over the two winters when I had it. But now in my LSS, it still has the original ACDelco and had a few not quite slow cranks, but still started.

In the matter of CCA, you could go as low as 525 CCA. As for DieHard batteries, I've seen some come through work that were 7-9 years old before they finally quit and from what I have heard for most any battery, the average life is 5 to 6 years.

look on the top/side/fine print of the battery. chances are, it'll say either JCI or Johnosn Controls Inc., as they make most of the more popular brands of batteries.
