car threw a cel today. i checked it and it read p0440,
obviously first thing i checked was the gas cap lol, it's on tight. i know that this code has something to do with fuel/ evap system, but i really don't want to go just throwing parts at it, if anyone has had experience with this code help me out please. give me some ideas as to what the most likely causes would be.
thanx alot!
thats the same code I was throwing when I removed my cat.
I would assume 02 sensor (rear). Did you try clearing the code first and seeing if it comes back?
i have'nt tried clearing it yet no, i read a couple stories of people just clearing it and it came right back, so i just wanna find out what the most likely culprit is and fix it then i'll clear it.
Well, I guess the first thing would be, did you do anything different or drive erratically when the code first appeared?
As you stated yourself, this could be anything, even a gas cap. I have seen similar codes (I know it was fuel system, not sure if it was exactly the same code) from the gas cap being over/under tightened. Apparently you should only be clicking the gas cap twice, that is supposed to be the proper tightness according to the local service tech.
More info on the matter certainly would help in diagnosing the cause.
It could have just been a fluke, really. I would clear it first, and see if it comes back. If it does, then further investigation is needed, if not, well problem solved!
i have'nt been driving it any differently lately than i normally do no. and the car seems to be running just as it normally would. that's why i'm a little miffed on this whole deal.
code will stay active for so many drive cycles without further incident.. coulda just been a fluke and now its just on because it hasnt reset itself yet ..
I would clear the code and see if it trips again before spending a penny on it...
p0440 is "Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction"
could be many things.. the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve etc... But i have thrown this code myself and it was just the gas cap not on right... took it off, put it back on and cleared the code.. voila.. but thats just my experience with it..
Best of luck!
possible rear 02 sensor in the cat.
thanx for the help guys, i reset the code this morning and now it's back on, played with the gas cap a little bit bfore i reset it, hopefully it'll shut off eventually.
these damned things can be so temperamental, lol.
I would inspect the gas cap, and ensure the seal is in good shape. Heck, maybe even replace it. I think I paid 5$ at autozone for my replacement. Worth it, its less than an O2 sensor...
Don't forget the two click tightness, a lot of GM vehicles pass through the service lane here, and leave with a "gas cap adjustment" and clearing the code, and never come back.
P0440 is a PITA code to diagnose. If you cant pass inspection with a CEL then just ignore it. It wont hurt the car at all. I have had the code on both of my cavs and never had it affect the car.
219whp - I <3 whine
kinda what i figured, and i probly will the only thing that worries me is now i'm gonna have to scan it more often to make sure i'm not throwing any other codes. oh wellz
thanx tink
I replaced my gas cap, swapped purge valves, and said f-it on the 03.

i'll probly replace the gas cap since it's next to nothing, but other than that, unless the car start's acting strangely i'll probly just leave it. i drive the car like an old lady, i mean i get on it every once and awhile for fun, but i never put the pedal to the floor or anything. meh, oh wellz, it's wonderful having a car that's got 4 million sensors in it!
