My wife's 97 Cavalier has a few issues I'd like some input on.
1. The drivers side door panel refuses to stay in the door. It is always the upper left edge popping out whenever the door is closed. I have taken it apart, replaced all the clips with GM ones and put it back together. Still it pops out. I noticed there was some broken plastic down where the lone screw on the lower left resides, so I drilled a new hole and made that screw tighten the two sections together again. But it still pops out. The other side has no such issues. Annoying!
2. There is a metal beam/crossmember that, looking in from the rear of the car, is above/behind the fuel filter (the filter hangs from it) and goes from the left side of the car to the right connecting the two side parts of the frame. One of the ends is almost completely rusted out, not much metal left attaching it to the side frame. Is this dangerous and what's the best way to fix it if so? It seems some kind of plate would need to be welded in.
3. There are two similar but distinct squeaking noises coming from the driver's side front, either the wheel or behind the dash, and the noises only occur when the car is moving! My initial guesses are that one is a brake pad spring and the other is the speedo cable. If I am right, can the speedo be lubed easily/effectively from behind the cluster or does the dash have to be removed?
Only thing i can help with is that there is no cable for the speedo. The whole cluster is electric motors.
