Obstructions changing Oil Pan Gasket
Thursday, June 03, 2010 7:21 AM
I have an oil leak up between the oil pan and transmission fluid pan on a 2001 2.2 ohv sunfire. While getting my car inspected the mechanic looked it over and said it looks like the oil pan (which is better than the rear mail seal like I had thought). The instructions in the Haynes manual says I need to remove a bunch of stuff, and loosen the engine strut (which sounds kind of dangerous working under the vehicle), but I have also seen a few people just say the remove the bolts and pull it out. Is there ennough clearance to get to the bolts and get the pan out without removing anything else? It does look kind of tight for the pan and some of the bolts.

Its been over 2 years since I put my engine back in, I can't exactly remember whats in the way. The car has been in storage so Im actually doing the first oil change this weekend since then, so it's been a long while since I've looked under there... I think you might have to move the horizontal cradle brace, but im not positive, and even still it's not a part to be worried about. You do not need to remove the motor mounts/trans mounts, so do not be afraid the engine is going to fall on you. Just take a look under there and it will be very simple to see what's in the way & whats not. If you haven't attempted this by the end of the weekend I will let you know for sure what needs to be removed after I do my oil change.
