Best Way to Clean Engine

Recently I spilled oil all over my engine bay. I am still hesitant to taking it to the car wash and spraying the engine. Some say to put trash bags on top of stuff that might not want to get wet. Is this legal to do at the car wash? Should I put trash bags over my intake, battery, and what else? Should I use only rinse full power or wash and then rinse just like the car? Thanks!

Most car washes don't get happy if you spray your bay off. If you do though, I have just always left my car running, and sprayed it down. None of that bag nonsense. Just don't go crazy and hold the nozzle an inch from parts and expect nothing to happen.
If you're doing it in your driveway or something, go get some de-greaser, spray all over, rinse with hose, repeat if necessary.

i just sprayed Krud Off and let it sit a few minutes. then i wipe the whole engine parts i could get at with a sponge. then i sprayed it all clean with a hose. looks a little cleaner, not bad for a quick job. once all my gauges and everything is in, i might do a better job. toothbrushes and rags? spray degreaser and then scrub with toothbrush? i have a big metal brush would that work better? what are the rags for? to wipe off where you already did to see if its clean?

Tooth brush and degreaser, then rinse with a hose and wipe off with a rag, or just wipe it off with a rag if you have enough....
I actually used some "greased lightning" wipes in a purple container, they did a damn good job imo. I think you can get them from big lots/walmart, they kind of do a two in one job since they break loose the crud then wipe it off onto the rag.
Just careful with some of those other heavy duty degreasers (like super clean) as they can eat away at some of the painted surfaces if you fail to dilute them (like it says on the back of the jug!!) That super clean wiped the paint right off my strut tower in a couple brushes with an toothbrush.

The alternator, starter and just about any electronics under the hood are waterproof. But like said above, just don't go holding a pressure washer 2 inches from them. A low pressure hose is best.

Also, don't start the car with the plastic bag still over the filter, it will crush the filter.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

i used my garden hose and put my thumb over the end. i first sprayed degreaser, rubbed it in with a sponge and then sprayed it off with the hose. i got everything under the hood wet besides the battery and it worked great starting right up.
