Engine and Transmission Mounts
Wednesday, August 11, 2010 12:10 PM
Lately I been hearing this THUMP/CLUNK sound coming from my engine bay. It sounds when parked turning/cranking on the car , shifting into Reverse or Drive, and when I accelerate . It does NOT sound when I turn to the left or right or if I hit any potholes or speed bumps. Also the motor moves a lot back and forward when pushing the car manually. This indicates a I have some engine mounts shot right? My car is a 2000 Z24 convertible Automatic Stock. So here are my questions...

1st. I want to change all the mounts. Transmission, Upper Mount(passenger side) and the lower mount (dog bone) correct? any others?

2nd. How easy is to change them? Any videos or write ups?

3rd. Do I have to lift or support the engine/transmission during the removal?

4th. What tools are needed to change them? any special ones?

5th. I want aftermarket mounts. I been searching the forum.. Im leaning towards RKsport Lower Mount(dog bone).. but what about the upper one? I see that TTR mount tends to fail after a couple months and has to be change annually...or use the original braket mount with prothane or urethane insert? or just buy the OEM mount Im guessing is just rubber. And what about the transmission one? use the same original bracket and just change the Insert with prothane or urethane? or buy OEM rubber mount? or what company makes the whole mount for the transmission with polyureathane mounts? RK sport also??

Thanks in advance I'll be checking constatly for replys !

Hey man, I have the exact same car! Now onto ur questions:

1. Those are the only mounts, so your correct on those.

2. Really easy, just unbolt and swap. Might be hard if you upgrade to urethane and such bc they tend to be a hair bigger, but after some finesse they should pop in. A little lube on the parts where there going into dont hurt either since it helps everything move.

3.Yes, you should support the engine, if you dont, it will fall out. But do one at a time. And just raise the engine a little bit to take the ension off the mounts, makes it easier for removal and install so ur not fighting the weight of the engine and trans.

4. Standard set of sockets with deeps, some wrenches and pry bar should all be what you need. Nothing special. Just unbolt, and re-bolt Not that simple, but its pretty much straight foreward.

5. I would say go with RK sport. My buddy has the lower dog bone and he has had it for about 6 years with no issue, and its still just like the day he bought it. Idk abt the upper but im sure there made, and I have not had any experience with TTR at all, so I cant comment on those. If you want stiffer motor mounts, stick with RK. If you want normal stuff, go with OE, since they really do tend to last the longest, and dont give you harsh shifts. Im not sure tho if anyone makes any aftermarket for the transmount, so If anyone knows please feel free to post up. Other then that, good luck. The only one I think U will have the most trouble with is the trans mount. since that ones a little harder to get to. What I would say is to just change the motor mounts (the trans mounts hardly go out or at least I have never heard of them being problemmatic) and see if that helps. Goodluck!!

great thanks... for the reply....also can this be done without a lift? like having the car on the ground???

Anyone else any input for the upper mount? what kind/brand??

I saw this 3 videos on youtube.

P.S. sneezy how do clean your top?? what do you use? My Z its red with white top.. and I cleaned it, but its hard to take out the stains... Like they never cleaned it where i bought it.

You can do it on the ground, but have the jack under the engine with a little pressure to take the weight off the mounts. No problem. And cleaning the top, I just wash it really well, Altho I have seen Convertible Top Cleaner at places like Oriley's and Autozone. I would say give that a try. I still have the black marks from where the top lays down, And im not sure as too how to get those out either. Goodluck!

Oh, and since we have very similar cars, hows ur fuel mileage?? Ive noticed mine being crap and in city driving getting less then 200 miles to the tank.

well without the A/C (didnt worked) I would get about 300 miles per tank till the Check Gauges Light .. lights up.
Now that it works I'm getting about 240... I think...I haven't check really. I filled the tank ... and during the that time i locked the car accidentally with the a/c on for about 15-20 min. idling...and then I went to Mexico and went I came back I had to make line in the border for about 45-50 mins. sooo i really dont know... prolly tomorrow i will fill up again and check how many miles I'll get with the A/C always on.....

Ok, yeah I just did a tune up, swapped the coils and module, and replaced the boots, and altho its running better, I still dont feel shes getting the best. Altho Im willing to bet there isnt much better she can do since she has 120,000 miles on her. But I still have yet to check the air filter so that may have something to do with it.

Could replace the O2 sensor or new cat converter with help as well.

so any one with any inputs on the top engine mount?
How this RK SPORT INSERT works? is it a metal piece or actually the "rubber" part and it just fits into the metal original brackets of the mount.???

That mount is just the rubber insert. Basically the metal parts that come off will go around that and be reinstalled into your car. Just have to remove the whole mount from the engine and replace the rubber part, then reinstall. Nothing big about it, but it does stiffen up the motor quite a bit. Like i said my buddy has the RK mounts on his Ecotec, and there great, and been on for since he bought the car, in 2002.
