gas guage goes way past full (PLEASE READ)

ok so today for the first time in a while i filled my tank to full. when i got in my car later i started it and the guage went from empty straight past full blocking the temp guage so it wouldnt move. for the past few weeks the whole cluster will dim when i turn the blinkers on or hit the brakes, so i think either i need a battery or alterator or both. i tried turning the key on and off to see if it would reset but it just sounds like a gear or something in the cluster is stripped and isnt catching the gauge right. i dont think its the sending unit or the floater in the tank because of the noise it makes when the key is turned. is there any way to fix it or am i going to have to buy a new cluster that shows different miles which i dont want to do. PLEASE HELP!!!

If it's for the 2005 in your profile, a new/used replacement cluster would show proper mileage, as the mileage is stored in the bcm, not the cluster. I'd say get your battery and alternator tested, and go from there.
