Greetings all!
I just picked up a 99 sunfire for my daughter. The gas tank leaks and when I look up parts I find that the 98 and 99 have different part numbers. Can any one tell me if there is a substantial difference? I have access to a 98 parts car and can get a good tank complete for $50. I don't want to buy it if it won't work.
Thanks!
If they are different part # they obviously they arent the same

The only difference I can recall is one is a metal tank and the other is a plastic tank?

So the 98 is plastic then, as my 99 is metal. That would be fine with me. Gee Rob, thanks for the insight, I knew that much. I can't find a 99 around here to scavenge and want to know if the difference is significant or just plastic to metal or a minor one I can overcome. I'm a Jeep guy and adapting things to meet the need is what we do.
Per GM...
1995-1998 Metal gas tank: 15.2 gallons
1999-2000 Not sure what material: 15.0 gallons
2001-2005 Plastic gas tank: 14.1 gallons
Best bet that GM now only sells the 15.2 metal and the 14.1 plastic.

Thanks GW-G.T! I have a line on a 98 tank so I'll give him a call and see if I can get it.
The 98 and older tanks have slightly different sending units. I'm not sure if the 99 pump assembly will just slide in. You can buy new 99 tanks for $145 from autozone. The 99-02 assembly's will fit plastic tanks.

I found a complete 98 tank with pump etc for $50. Can I drop the whole thing in? My current set up yields a flaky fuel gauge anyway.
