it looks like I am going to have to replace my water pump on my '98 Sunfire 2.4. One question. Why is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold to change out the water pump? Is there a bolt under there or is it that it just cannot be reached from under the car. about to get started but need to go buy a Haynes book.
if your going to change the water pump and remove the timing belt I would reccomend to get another timing chain hydrolic tensioner too. And dont shut it off after its put back together for the first time untill it has has time to build up oil pressure into the tensioner again. (if you shut it off to early the chain could go loose and back spin causeing piston to valve contact) It just happened about a month ago at my shop.)
timing "chain" not belt* sorry
you do not need to remove the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe, you only need to remove the bracket that goes from the block to the manifold
thanks, that's what I thought. I think I replaced the water pump a few years ago with an Autozone water pump and I don't remember removing the exhaust manifold and pipe.
Do you need to remove the Timeing cover? does the pump run directly off the chain or can I do it w/o touching the chain?
