i was just wondering if i could get away with just putting a new timing chain and tensioner in my sunfires ecotec, i dont really have the money right now to buy the whole kit
in reality you can get away with leaving the car as is if still runs, timing chains dont usually break, im not familiar with what comes in the kit but usually when people do timing belts, the do the belt and tensioner....so why not just chain and tensioner

kind of a loaded statement. True, Ecotec's timing chains don't typically break...however, they do (and WILL) stretch. Especially on an 03. The best solution would be to replace the assembly as a whole unit, specifically from an '05.
Also, a timing belt is not the same as a chain, a chain has to be lubed, and also has plastic guides that wear over time.
basically, for added insurance, replace everything. Taking shortcuts just ends in more headache.
i think he means as far as guides and such.
OP, if its not making noise then yes u can get away with just doing the chain but if there is noise such as a vibration chatter coming from it, then doing a chain and tensioner may not be enough. i would honestly wait till u get enough to get the whole kit just because i have seen those chains go bad and snap. but if there is no chatter from the chain then u shoukd be able to just do the chain and tensioner and get away with it. goodluck!
^^^ this....but what is the difference between the '03 set on an '05 set ?....Material used or something

I'm also curious about this. My 03 is coming up on 100k miles, and I'm getting ready to show it some love.
so what is the difference in the in the gear from an 05?
I have never heard or seen anything different between the 03 to the 05. I did a quick check at autozone.com and they have the 03 and 05 listed as the same kits. So Im not sure what the change or difference is. So if Jack can shed more light on that, i would be interested in hearing about that. Thanks!
