I have a 1997 cavalier 2.2 and about 3 months ago the car would start to backfire and run rough when it was raining. Then after it stopped raining about 30 miles later it would run normally. Now it just runs rough all the time.
Idle is lower than normal and rough with an occasional backfire. When accelerating or going up a hill it really starts to get rough with a lot of backfiring.
I've been told that it might be ignition coils, but I have the 3spd and I really don't want to replace them if I don't have to.
If anybody could tell me what might be the problem, the help would be appreciated.
i too think it might be the coils. I know Advance or Autozone is able to test them and tell you if they are good. They could also test the ignition control module... Did I mention it was a free test? Do you have a check engine light on?
Yeah i get a check engine light.... I'm gonna get the coils off later on. I was hoping that somebody would give me something easier to check... O well.

ignition module yes, coils only thing they can do is a resistance test which really only tells about 1/8 of the story.
