04 cavalier (c1275, p1811)

I have an 04 Cavalier with an automatic transmission. The car has about 203,000 miles, of which I'm responsible for 180,000 of those miles. The transmission has never had any problems since I've owned the car.

For the past week or so I've been hearing a noise coming from the front drivers side that sounds like the hub bearing is going bad. Yesterday I was driving through town and my traction control turned off, it was pretty rainy and roads were slippery. I pulled up to a stop light and for some reason I shifted from drive to neutral and then back to drive, with the brake pressed of course. When I went from neutral to drive, the transmission shifted really hard back into drive, and definitely jerked when doing it. The check engine light was on (I have a pacesetter header so it is usually on). The "Trac Off" light was also on. I was already on my way home so I continued on the short ride home and didn't notice any problems while the car was shifting through the gears. I usually park in the cul-de-sac in front of my house so I pull up in front of the driveway and reverse into my spot. When I stopped in front of the driveway and shifted from drive to reverse, it shifted hard and jerked again. Then shifted from reverse to drive to finish parking, and it shifted hard and jerked again. I used my code reader on the check engine light and 2 codes popped, C1275 and P1811. I haven't driven the car at all since I parked it, but in a few minutes I'm going to move it from the street into the driveway.

C1275 was described by the code reader as "Powertrain Control Module Requested ETS To Be Disabled"

P1811 was described by the code reader as "Maximum Adapt and Long Shift"

After doing a little bit of research, the most common thing I found for C1275 was replacing the throttle position sensor. P1811 was harder to research...what I found was that it could be the pressure control solenoid or some other issue that would require the transmission to be serviced.

My budget is tight right now and this is my only car. If anyone could help me with this it would mean a lot to me. Thanks in advance for any help.

Lol...I figured I would get at least one reply to this thread.

Has the trans ever been flushed? If it hasn't don't at this point.

The fluid and filter should be good. They've been changed. I cleared my codes and took it for a 5 mile drive and they didn't pop back up yet.

I was using my code reader to view live data and the absolute throttle position percentage at idle is 9.8%. Is that normal?

Also the transmission has never been flushed, just fluid and filter change.

Is the transmission control solenoid in the pan? Also, is there more than one?

I'll definitely keep y'all updated

I've put about 100 miles on my car since I cleared my codes and I haven't had any issues so far, besides the P0420 code that my header throws.

Would having a 62mm throttle body cause my TPS percentage to increase? I was reading something that said if the TPS percentage is over 5% at idle then there might be an issue. It sits at 9.4 to 9.8% at idle. It's also is in the mid 80% range at wide open throttle. Besides the big bored throttle body, I have an AEM cold air intake with the bypass valve and my pacesetter 4-1 header, high flow cat, and magnaflow single pipe cat back exhaust.

Also, my car idles around 590 to 610rpm.

an automatic usually idles low, mine is in the 6-700 range. how are you logging your TPS? look for a post in the tuning section about 80% throttle, etc. I know it has been discussed but don't remember the details off hand.

I have a code reader (actron cp9580) that reads live data, tps %, calculated engine load %, manifold air pressure, intake air temp, rpm, vehicle speed, coolant temp, etc.

This is the link to the site I was looking at concerning tps %

I think I might have found the problem...

I was looking at the wires going into the TPS sensor plug and one of them was cracked open just enough to where I could see the wires. I think when I was driving in the rain that day some water might have gotten on the wire. I went over it a few times with electrical tape, so hopefully the problem is solved. I also took off my 62mm throttle body and put the stock one back on noticed that my throttle position at idle dropped from 9.8% to 8.6%. The 62mm throttle body bore is larger than the bore on the intake manifold, so I figured it would be better for the car.

If anything else happens with it I will definitely update on it.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!

Out of curiosity..... Since it says "Maximum adapt and Long Shift". Does your car seem to shift really hard going from 1st to 2nd gear. Even now that the CEL is out?

i find it amusing that SHOoff has nothing better to do but follow me around & be an unhelpful dick in even cross-forum. - Jon Mick

Right now it shifts good. I need to replace my motor mounts so I feel a little play because of that, but the tranny is working just fine. Checked the fluid yesterday and it looks good.

Last night my car threw the c1275 at me again and it also threw a p1134 at me. The p1134 says "Heated Oxygen Sensor Transition Time Ratio Sensor 1". It seems like the c1275(Powertrain Control Module Requested ETS To Be Disabled) always comes up with another code. This is starting to get annoying because my upstream O2 sensor is less than a year old. Also my car shows p0420 three times...one as current, one as confirmed, and one as pending.
