Stalling/sputtering on take off
Thursday, September 23, 2004 6:01 PM
I have a 1996 sunfire GT 5 spd, and every once in a while on take off the car seems to want to dye. I have to pretty much slam down the gas pedal to keep it from stalling. Makes it seem like i cant drive stick, yet, it just started doing that a few weeks ago. I recently changed the oil and put in some new spark plugs. I'm not very familiar with this car so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I am just throwing this out, but did you properly gap the spark plugs? ::shrugs::

I've got a 99 Z24 5 spd.
I've had the same problem since the day I bought it.
Nobody has a sweet clue what it is.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention.....
You have to use AC delco plugs.
Don't listen to those guys who say to use the BOSCH platinum. They're @!#$.

4drhotrod your problem will be back. When it comes back change your plugs to the Delcos

Yes I agree with Vinay Mal. The platinums work for a while but the problems will come back.

hey man, ya know what, i had that same problem with my 02 cavalier, turns out that i needed the whole piece that says ECOTEC basically it was the coil packs and the module. but i would deffintly be looking at the plug boots, and the white plastic piece under the cover that says 2.4 DOHC (the piece that you have to remove to get to the spark plugs. im also guessing that since you have a GT you have either the 2.4ltr or the 2.3HO. from what i know those motors were prone to crack those white plastic pieces after so long. b/c the way your describing it, it sounds as if its almost mis-firing. so it will tend so "spudder" if you will, when you accelerate. i do hope this helps. when you remove the cover, and look at that plastic piece bolted to the underside of the cover, look for a "chalky" residue, and obviously any cracks, if you see any, then theres your problem. replace the part, and boom, your problem is solved. i hope this helps. take care!

Bosh +2's are junk. I had a set in my 2.2. and the electrode broke off in cylinder #3. That was after about a month of using them. If you want platinum use AC Delco platinum plugs.

I had a problem like this and it turned out to be a leak in the small vacuum hose from the throttle to manifold, the one that connects to the nipple on the front of the manifold. I`m not sure why it was causing it to almost stall but my theory is that the computer was getting stumped on the air/fuel mixture of the small amount of air leaking in then on take off it wanted to die but i put the clutch in and it went back to idle. Something to check atleast...........
i had the same problem last winter. my sunbird would stall out after i'd stop and try to go. it would shake, sputter and run really crappy pretty much everytime after i'd stop then try to accelerate at lights and stop signs. the problem was bad wires, since i replaced the wires i havent had a single problem.

sorry, i forgot to specify it was off cold starts. As far as the wires go, well, the 2.4 doesnt have wires, but thanks for the input.

i'm having exactly the same problem man! every time i get my car started when it's cold.. drive into de street, accelerate, stop, and my car starts sputtering stalling and all that stuff as it would want to die.. i hit the pedal to the bottom but the engine seems to have no response... few seconds later it wakes up and gets working.. altough recently when it did that it just died when i was driving... a mechanic checked all the stuff of the spark plugs the boots and the white thing and found nothin wrong :S... im getting really pissed off with this situation!

my bird used to do the samething, in the winter in the mornings. it would take forever just to get my car started. then once i get to the highway and i come to a stop my car would sputter and 1/2 way stall out. the car wouldnt want to go but the engine was still running. i would have the petal to the floor, after holding it there my car would finally go. when it would rain my car would do the samething. when my car would get cold and wet it would shake really bad in the rain. my problem was my wires, but i guess if the 2.4 apparently doesnt have spark plug wires thats not your problem. i took my car to the mechanic and they were dumb and couldnt figure out the problem. needless to say they are no longer my mechanic.

im getting really mad..
i mean... my car throws no codes!... the housing and the boots seem to be ok... changed the coolant temp sensor because i read that that caused rought idle and nothing! so what could it be! grrr.. i see that many people has this problem but almost none of them can solve them or if they can.. it's another thing. hope someone could find out what it is...

I have the exct same problem. Mine is on cold starts. If I let it warm up for about 3-4 minutes it seems to work the problem out of its system and is fine for the rest of the drive. But if it sits for more than 10minutes...when I start it up it will take a @!#$ again. I replaced the IDI, fuel pump, filter, spark plugs, injectors were cleaned and been to the shop 4 times. Its really pissing me off. Im wondering now if its possible that either my UR crank pulley or my AEM alt pulley could be part of the problem?
I'm proud to say I'm one of the few people to beat and eliminate this problem.

It really pissed me off for a long time too. You'd have to let up off of the gas off the line just to avoid stalling.

Try checking the oxygen sensor. my car does the same thing, and it needs a new oxygen sensor( i dont have delco plugs and my car is fine). but your O2 sensor might be on its way out like mine is. good luck
I still have that problem, and i have change both O2 sensors, IAT, coil packs, spark plugs, had my car reflashed (reflash helped a little but not that much). Only thing i need to change is the IAT. A guy at the dealer said it could be the thermostat the car could be getting a bad reading from start cause the car to do that. I have to try that wheni change my thermostat.
