Spark plugs

Ok, got the power steering pump all fixed up so now I'm looking to get my tune-up straightened out. I pulled the old plugs about 2 weeks ago and put in some Bosch Platinum+4's. Car seems to sputter a bit on these and was wondering what plug should I use? Just the Bosch Platinum? These?

Is the default .060 gap what I need or do I need to regap with the feeler gauge to a specific gap? Thanks, did search but didn't find my specific answer so this is the reason I ask more than anything. Thanks for all of your help as usual.

"Apparently".... It takes a lot more voltage to push the spark through the Bosch Platinum +4's. They work better when our cars have some sort of aftermarket ignition system such as MSD. Now I don't have problems (97 2.2 OHV), but my friend does (97 2.4L), so it appears to be different with every car. I highly doubt that you can regap the Platinum+4's.

As much as I hate to say it, you can never go wrong with ACDelco. Our cars were designed for it.

I have never heard of any problems with the Bosch Platinum+4 for the 2.2 engine. I have only heard about them having problems in the 2.4. I run them in my 2.4 with no problems. What octane gas are you using? 87? 89? 91? Try using middle grade there in PA, if you aren't already. If the problem is still there, than just go back to the regular tip platinum plugs.

You can't change the gap on the +4s. I don't think they make a device to gap those. Anyway, the gap is supposed to be .060 for your engine.

Thanks, J-kub. I'll most likely just get a set of AC Delco's for it then and put in the factory spark plugs. I also believe I probably need to change my fuel filter. I'm still learning about cars and have learned a lot from this forum. Car has 97k on it and as far as I know has never had it's fuel filter changed. I'll have to look to see what is involved in doing that to see if I can do it myself or if it is just better to take it to a shop. (I don't have garage unfortunately).

@Gary, Yep I know you can't change the gap on the +4's. I've been running 87 octane most of the life of the car. I'm due for a full tank of gas here tomorrow so maybe I can get some fuel treatment and then dump 89 octane in it and go from there and see how it runs.

That would be what I would try. Get some fuel injector cleaner and then put some 89 octane in. That might fix your problem. If not, than as I stated before, go back to single ground plugs. Bosch will refund your money on the +4s if you still have the dated receipt. Here is their web site:

Good Luck and hope the higher octane works for ya. I have no complaints about the +4s in my Z24.

Thanks, Gary. Will give that a try then. Also need to research the fuel filter - with it being in there the entire life of the car that could also be my problem I guess if I'm not getting proper fuel mixture/pressure for firing purposes.

That is also a possibility. Check on this forum for replacement procedures. You have to be careful if you do it yourself.

Ah, used some Gumout Fuel Inject Cleaner at Sheetz last night when I filled up and the car does seem to be running smoother now. I still ordered a set of 4 AC Delco plugs from Napaonline so they are on the way. Not too terribly impressed wtih the Bosch's... now if I can find that darned receipt maybe I can get a refund on the Bosch's. hehe

GM recommends using Chevron gas because Techron is already in it, and that is what the dealerships use to clean injectors. I took My Lumina in with an injector problem and they told me that's all they did to fix it was run a tank through with techron added. Told me if i just used Chevron regularly, it would likely never be a problem again. Take it for what it's worth.

Oh, and on the original topic- Everyone I've ever known that tried those Bosch plugs has had problems with them. They're like the new Splitfire craze.

Well all, I guess that Chas1 and myself are the only ones that have not had a problem with the Bosch Plat. +4s in our Cavaliers. My car has been running them since 2000 and I have never had a problem with them.

Lesson learned. Took the car out today to the grocery store (still haven't gotten my AC Delco's... so still have the Bosch's in) and noticed the little sputtering sound I'm getting from it sounds like a little bit of a misfire from the tail pipe. I'd certainly say it's the Bosch's doing it because I didn't have that before I changed spark plugs. So hopefully I can fix that back up next weekend and have a nice smooth running car again.

I had Bosch +4's in my 2000 Z24 a week after I bought it.. and my fuel economy suffered horribly. I threw them away first chance I could get

Just saw this thread... I was sucked into putting the Bosch +4s in my car a year ago (99 Z24). So does the consensus here agree that the ACDelco's are the best plug, or is there something else I should look into for my 2.4?

I got my AC Delco's in yesterday and the car seems to be back up to the way it was running before changing the plugs so all is well with the world again. Those Bosch's sucked! Nothing but popping and sputtering out of my exhaust with those things in. I don't get that with the AC Delco's. Never again, I'm only going to run the AC Delco's from now on.

Thanks. Any evidence that the Iridium plugs work any better (despite the price)?

It's a marketing gimmick. I think I remember in the commercial them showing the spark ionizing from all 4 electrodes. It doesn't. It'll only jump through one. A friend bought them for his 2.4... wondered why it was hesitating. Just wouldn't listen to me though.

Retarded, useless, JUNK.

I'll tell you what ARE good spark plugs... NGK Iridium... Had em in my car for almost 2 years now... runs like a champ. Still nice and clean.

So the Iridiums ARE better then AC Delcos? Can anyone else back this up before I buy em?
