OK this is getting OLD! Thumping Noise ....
Saturday, May 21, 2005 11:19 PM
OK ... well last weekend I replaced my driver side wheel bearing and that stopped the squeal, then tonight I replaced the CV joint and I still have a thumping coming from the driver's side floorboard. These are the characteristics:

1. Coming from the Driver's Side
2. Thumping increases with speed and stops when not moving
3. Is loudest when driving straight
4. Reduces sound when turning and accelerating
5. Brakes look fine and smooth
6. Front tires are newly rotated but noise was coming since before the rotation
7. Have replaced Driver's Wheel Bearings and CV 1/2 shaft

Other then that I think I'm going to put her on some jack stands and put it in drive to see if I can see were it is coming from?? Any ideas?

Thanks, Shane

I would jack up the front end of your car... and leave the wheels on. Check BOTH first for up and down movements... could also be your passenger side wheel bearing. Mine did the same thing a while ago and I had to replace both of them (wheel bearings/hub assembly).

Did you replace the whole hub assembly? Or just the bearing?

I'll check that tonight hopefully ... also I replaced the entire hub assembly. Now would a bad hub bearing really make a thumping noise? The driver's side was squealing but that went away when I replaced it ... would that make the tire thump? Just don't see how the bearing can cause a thumping sound. The thud sounds like someone is hitting the floorboards with a rubber mallet. Either way I'll check that tonight ... it doesn't cost anything either!

That's the same sound my car had when my wheel bearings were bad... rubber mallet to floor...

Think about it this way... if your wheel has play in it... and moves while you're driving... it's not steady like it should be... it's moving in and out while you're driving... well tha'ts about the best I can explain it... hard to put into words. Good luck either way!
