Something I Never Paid Attention to Before .....

An old geezer in my neighborhood stopped by to visit

while I was changing oil this weekend on my Cavalier.

Casually, he mentioned that the fresh oil would be

thinner, and the old oil had probably thickened so as

"slow down" the engine.

Later on, when I got ready to start-up the engine, I paid

attention. YES, the engine did idle about 10 % faster.

It's probably going to get better gas mileage too.

He was RIGHT.

you couldnt tell that its thicker when you drained it? i dont see it making a difference in performance though.

All I can say, after he left and I was pouring the used

oil into containers for proper disposal, "yes" the used

oil did seem thicker than the fresh oil that I'd just put

back into the engine (same brand and weight).

That's why I paid attention when I next started the engine.

Still think he's right.

Think about this.....

Pretend you're part of your engine.

Now run in a straight line.

There is virtually no resistance, this is comparable to new oil.

Now, run in a straight line in a swimming pool.

Enough said.

I know it's JUST a Cavalier, and I'm sorry if I hurt your ego.

I know it's all in my head, but I've always felt that my vehicles run better after an oil change. My car also runs better after it's been washed!

Well, so far you're the only one who feels this way.

Majority rules.

Seriously, sit and think about it before jumping to conclusions.

He's right, it does not make a noticable difference. The oil coats are so thin that the miniscule difference between the thickness (weight to be precise) of one oil at that thin coating is negligable. I could see a performance gain if your oil were as thick as sludge, but the wieght and thickness difference between oil at one or even two oil change intervals is nearly zero.
