Ok so my car is fine one day, the next day it idles for crap, and when I give it more then 1/4 throttle it starts making this sputtering quivering noise. It sounds like its doing twice the rev basically but now its twice slower too. Kinda a machine gun effect with my exhaust. And I can go at any rpm but I've gotta slowly get to the RPM though I cant just floor it or else its messed up. I drive a 95' 2.2l cavy btw auto. And I just cant find were its messed up at. Sometimes when I floor it, it back fires too I can hear it spark in the t/b. Anyone help me? I need help bad, IM also getting extremely bad mileage. Like 5 mpg at most. But when I hit 1/8-1/4 throttle its totally fine but still get terrible mileage, so its either not enough air (vacumm maybe egr valve?) spark (Plugs are perfect, wires are ok) or fuel (maybe fuel pump? I'll take it in soon, if nobody can help me but If someone can help me I can do my own work I just cant find the problem! grr thx.

take you plugs out and look at them you might have engine damage
Nah the plugs are fine, and I know when the engine is damaged. The timing belt is fine too.

O2 sensor, And the crappy ness is limp mode.

you cant know to much , your motor does have a timing belt

I didnt think it was limp mode, cause then wouldnt the check engine light come on? Cause mine didnt come on...

Twister your car has a timing chain not a belt.

Regardless of belt or chain I dont care its the same to me, I just want to fix this problem...I am throwing no codes and no I dont work at autozone I work at sears automotive but we dont diagnose things. And I was gonna sell this POS to make a few payments so I need to fix it asap.Although I did used to work at O'Reillys, and they couldnt tell me whats up either. But theyre not cavalier people like this forums is.

To me, it sounds like a weak spark.
I would check your coils with an ohlm metter.
Your spark plugs are probly realy dark from the lack of propper combustion.
My 93 sunbird had weak coils (cracked) and had no engine codes.
Guessing the catalitic converter is plugged up. Gut the cat or get a high flow one.

Stock... and loving every minute of it.
i had the same problem and it was a cylinder 4 misfire so i replaced the plugs with ACDelcos, new coil pack and new wires and it worked great for about a week or so then i smelled something burning so i checked my wired and see anything but i am willing to bet that it is so hot under the hood that it is just burning up the plug wires. so i am going to check them after work and see if that is it. i have a 99 2.2 sorta

I thought it was my cat when this happend liek amonth ago to me turns out it was my iginition module, dont run it too much thought it buggers up the computer thrying to fix stuff itsself. 99.9% sure thats what it is
That describes almost exactly what was going on with my mom's Grand Am when 2 of the plug wires were put on backwards. I had a clogged cat before on a Cav & it didn't fit that description at all. My clogged cat only caused the car to go slow and have almost zero acceleration, deceleration on hills.
I am having a similiar problem - rough idle, slow acceleration, and something is knocking when more throttle is applied. I have already changed the fuel filter and O2 sensor but that didn't fix the problem. I did get a CEL but it only comes on once in a while so Autozone couldn't help because they need it to be on to diagnose the car. I would run a fuel pressure check but don't know where the fuel lines are. It would be great if anyone could post a pic of the location of fuel lines of a 95 Sunfire 2.2L. I know it's somewhere near the TB but that's about it. Any information appreciated.
Have just replaced spark plugs & wires and that fixed the acceleration problem. Also cleaned out air filter in the process. However, rough idle is still there and the car staggers when I apply just a bit gas to maintain speed. If I apply more gas or floor it the problem is gone. Autozone said I might have water in the gas tank. Went to OReilly and they didn't know what's causing it. Appreciate it if anyone would point me to the right direction.
Thanks.
