(98 Quad 4, 2.4L) I have a rebuilt cylinder head I spent many hours last summer porting and polishing myself sitting in a box in the garage. Unfortunately I could never install it because the head had some stripped bolt holes where the cam towers connect to the cylinder head and I didn't want to install it just for it to leak oil. I've never had to repair a stripped hole before so out of fear of forever messing up the cylinder head I decided to pack up the cylinder head and put the project into mothballs.
However I've just recently started looking into repairing these stripped bolt holes, but I want to make sure I do it right. I was researching and found helicoil kits that are supposed to make this job eaiser. Now I understand the basic idea behind it all (drill, tap, insert coil), but I would like to know if anyone has any recommendations so I don't mess up this one time shot.
Has anyone ever done this before and is it as easy as the kit makes it sound? Do I need to be concerned about using this in aluminum? Do I need to do anything special since these are blind holes? Plus any other hands on knowledge you can give me. Thx.
You're smart to ask...
My dumb answer...
You and I may never learn how to do a helicoil
as well as a professional...
They'd probably charge something like $30...
And, they'd earn it....
drill the holes out oversize....then take a tap to match the threads on the helicoil and tap it, make sure and run it through several times...install the helicoil that matches the bolt by screwing it in make sure it is in all the way...screw in the bolt and VOILA! your done its not that hard really. Good Luck

i have tryed the coils before and i messed it up even worse if i was you i whould take it to a pro to do it
my car is a girl because I describe her as sexy, beautiful, hot. I look at her curves, and I caress her body once a week with various soaps and sponges. Also, I get in and out of her every day.
