Bigger oil filter... any one know what car uses the same thread but bigger filter?
Friday, December 28, 2007 8:09 PM
Ok well my buddy is big into his 4x4 rock crawling and does some professional rock crawling... He was showing me how he uses a Ford F-150 oil filter on his 2004 Jeep TJ as it is quite a bit bigger then the TJ filter... not really any major benefit other then more oil holding capacity and in some cases better filtering..

Just wondering if any one new about another vehicle that we share the same oil filter thread with?

is there an advantage of running a larger filter? performance? better oil cooling? i know it would provide better filtration
on my plymouth made it easier to remove the filter

Holds slightly more oil, and more filtration media, plus a bigger filter is usually easier to grasp, so makes oil changes easier usually.

.....

THE PF-61 DOES NOT have a anti-drainback valve.

you people really need to read\watch the GM TEC vids that say NOT TO USE an over size filtler on a quad-4.
(it says at high RPM it can spin off.)

if your worried about how good it filtlers, A change the oil sooner, B use a UPF-44.

but to answer the question. yes a 46/61 have the same threds, and a 47/51 are the same.
2.4's use 46's 2.3's use 47's

the 52 has the valve.

the 61, the one we need on a 2.4!, dose not.

but go ahead and try, see what happens.

my @!#$ just has 136K on it now becasue i never race, beat on it, or treat it bad in general.

as for the Fram PH3506 and the Wix 51042, the cross reference to the Champ PH44.

the Napa Gold 1522 cross ref's to the PH59 Champ.

the Delco PF61 cross ref's to the Champ PH59, has an anti drain back.

if a filter is installed properly and has a good gasket, then it shouldnt go anywhere or spin off. its possible the gasket or threads were slightly different in length and the filter was bottoming out, not creating enough clamping force on the gasket of the filter to keep it on.

ive been using my larger filter for a while now and i do race it and haent had any problems as of yet.

Glad someone started this. Used the same idea on my dad's G-series van w/350ci V-8 (Saw it in Hot Rod). Been meaning to do the same with my truck's tu-tu but just didn't have the time to go to the store and visually compare them all... Thanks!

I see no fault in running a Motorcraft filter... Heck, back in the day they used to brag about how their filters & plugs saw use in some very high-end specialty built cars (Mostly Ford's from what I remember but still), including A.J. Foyt's '69 Indy winner. And they were the same kind anyone could buy off the shelf, for cheap.

This is horrible. Use the filter recommended in your car. If you want to improve its purpose, buy a better filter.

Just a thought: Has anyone here looked into Filtration Solutions FS 2500? It's a bypass-style filter that actually compliments the factory filtration and extends oil service intervals. They're really big with the diesel crowd (commercial, hobbist & daily driver). IIRC this is their site link:

nullhttp//www,filtrationsolutions.comnull

Give it a look and see!
