2.4 Motor swap
Monday, January 12, 2009 9:56 PM
I have a 98 cavalier with a junk 2.4.. I'm thinking about putting a 2.0 LITER SUPERCHARGED out of a 06 cobalt, just would like to know if it will work?? I know i have to make motor mounts and stuff,my thing was would i have to change the cluster and all the stuff?? Thanks

you would have to rewire the whole car with the cobalt wiring. that means guages BCM ECU everything. The Jbody ecu wont run that motor. You could use a standalone unit if emissions arent an issue where you live.

not worth it at all get a 2.2eco and get the M62 supercharger or get the saab turbo setup for it not worth swapping the 2.0 in. it can be done but cost wise i think it would be better for the 2.2eco not to mention theres more info on that engine around here your issue will get answered real fast

JBO since July 30, 2001

Im sure the 2.2 eco would be easier but still lots of work for the sake of Mr. Mike Lipa having a 98 cav.

Ok well thank you very much!! I'm going to go with the 2.2 Eco.. Does the Eco 5-speed trans mount the same as the current 5-speed one?? And does anyone have a good list on what i will need to do the hole swap?? Thanks

Oh and what are u saying Mr.CraiGT don't think im smart enough to do it?? Or u just jealous that i have a cavalier and ur stuck with that pontiac?? Thanks lmao

One more thing is do u think im better off just rebuilding it?? I want the motor to last a long time at least!! But i would like to be able to get at least 250 or 300 hp out of it.. I wasn't sure to go with a turbo set-up or supercharge it?? Not sure which one would be better? When i got the car in was locked up,i was able to get it free but the dumb ass blew the head gasket and just added water and it locked right up.. But started to pull it apart and it was full of ice in the head block everywhere. So im not sure if it cracked something?? Thanks

Easy there killer, there is no need to start bitching at people.

Ecotec swap

The 2.4(LD9) tranny will not fit an eco, you need a tranny(F23) from eco J-body.
Since your car is a 98 your are going to have to swap ALL of the wiring over.(which is was Craig's comment ment)
You also need to swap the dash and cluster to the 2000+ style(2000+ Js have BCMs and are required for the swap to function)

The easiest way to do it is to get a donor car(a totaled 03-05) with the options you want and swap EVERYTHING(engine, tranny, BCM, ECM, wiring, dashes, clusters, etc....)

Ok well i took it the wrong way and im very sorry!! Im not sure if its worth all that then i think i may be better off just doing a rebuild on the 2.4.. This sucks, but thank u guys very much for the info!:-) Im not sure what i should do??
Re: 2.4 Motor swap

stick with the 2.4. for the work involved with the ecotec swap if your not into big gm backed parts then you dont need an eco. the 2.4 can do everything the eco can do so its not really worth doing the swap... unless of course you'd like to try out a new engine platform. in which case you'd better off just buying a whole new car.

And I should've been drown in the rivers I've found in token lost...

make a decision, then do it.

swapping an eco into a pre 2000 car is going to take an intricate knowledge of the car's mechanical layout and electrical systems. I would not advise a swap on an older j-body unless you have lots of specific experience with jbodies, access to pinout diagrams and wiring diagrams.

I say stick with what you have and rebuild it. forget about an ecotec swap.. without years of experience working on your car it'll be damn near impossible to accomplish without the help of a much more experienced j-body mechanic/tuner

Yeah thats what i am going to do. I found a place www.jbodyperformance.com that has a lot of performance parts for it so im going to do that then! It's too nice and i don't want to rig up a motor in it and i like doing it right the first time.. I want it to be done by the summer so yea,but thank u guys very much for the input.. And again i am sorry CraiGT!! I pulled the motor and trans out a few days ago so i am going to start work on that.. Thank's Mike

Do more searchin than just jbodyperformance. They are pretty pricey. There are other sites that will have the parts you need a chunk of change cheaper. Search extensively before spending money. If you plan to boost and the type of forced induction you use dictates what you need to pit inside the engine. Just save yourself the headache of buying the wrong stuff.

1.) importperformance.net
2.) turbotechracing.com
3.) allecotec.net
4.) ABSOLUTELY NO MANTAPART
5.) classifieds on this site
6.) there are many more but you gotta search.

Anyone else wanna throw a couple sites on here to help out Mr. Mike Lipa. I'm sure he would appreciate it.

Just remember, after searching, search some more.

K thanks yeah they are pricey and i do plan on putting a turbo on it.. Im not sure where i want my compression at yet.. But i will search the sites u gave me. I was thinking about boring it out to 20 or 50 thousand but again i was going to call around to some machine shops and see what they think would be good. I would like to get close to 300hp out of it! I took the motor apart last nite didn't look too good at first, lots of ice build up in the coolant port. But i got it all out now and got it freed up but she was a little rusty in the cylinders. But thanks again!!
