Valve relief's
Friday, January 30, 2009 11:08 AM
Okay....well I can have my car up and running now.....either with 086 head and stick to the secret cams.....or stock LD9 head and use HO cams.

BUT!!!! I want both 086 and HO cams on my LD9......after considering my sunk cost and listed opportunity cost I decided I might as well wait and do the two.

Now I will be adding valve relief's to my dished wiescos. They machine shop is charging 5 dollars per relief. My question is do I need to do the exhaust and intake, or just the intake side?

P.S. I will be measuring with clay on the pistons before I do all this, for all the Quad 4 hybrid guys out there!

if your measuring with clay wont you find out if you need to do both intake and exhaust valve reliefs?

only the intake valves are going to be of worry as they are larger and dont use clay...

use TOOTSIE ROLLS...

place them on top of the pistons with the wrapper still on, bolt head on, time cams etc etc, rotate over just as you would using clay. tear it all apart then take the tootsies and throw them in the freezer, wait like 20 mins until they are hard and measure how thick they are. this will give you how much clearance you have.

ive heard having .070 is safe just in case. but more than likely you'll have less.

and holy cow, 5 a relief aint bad at all... might have to send you my wiseco's.... hmmm....

Wont you have to have your rotating assembly rebalanced if they remove material from your pistons?

With taking material off of just the pistons you shouldn't. Because when they balance your rotating assembly when it comes to the pistons they take the lightest piston weight. Then they take material off the other pistons to get the weight the same as the lightest. So as long as say all your pistons weigh 120 grams and you take 10grams off of one you would have to take the same off of the others.

Should I flatten the tootsie rolls first?

As for you sending me your pistons....im fine with it brad but you have to consider shipping.....so would it still be cost effective to go this route?....plus wait and see if this place does a good job on my pistons before you let me know.

If you do this you will be my hero. I really dont feel like spending $250 on a regrind when I have an HO cam under my bed.

Inconclusive......the valve hit the tootsie roll on the edge. Thus I could not accurately measure "that" compared to the previous measurement prior to installation. Sorry guys but im not giving up....Im gonna use clay this time around.

Really sucks after doing it all alone....and nothing to show.....BUT!!!.....The intake valves only touched the tootsie rolls,,,,not the exhaust valves....so I should be good with just reliefs on the intake side.

Im tired and need another beer.
