another 086 cam option

I have 4 95 intake cams I am having reground, one is for my engine and the other 3 I am going to sell on ebay.

I know lots of people are wanting HO cams with their hybrid 086 swap but are concerned about lift and clearances. One person clams the HO cams will work and a couple others say the lift is just a bit too high for comfort. So im going to have the other cams sent out and reground in the next few weeks to give a different alternative. My question is what duration would be most desirable? Colt cams told me 219 duration at 50 with a lift of .385 was doable with the 95 intake cams. I have found a different place I will be doing business with. What duration and lift, if possible, would be most desired when I get these cams reground? Figured I would ask here since this is where most of my bids would probably come from. And what would be an ideal starting price to you?

colt cams cam do much higher lift than that... however... he thinks lash caps will be needed between the top of the valve stem and the lifter in order to have enough pre-load for the lifter to then work properly. (due to the way regrinding is done)

they told me 3 different lift numbers higher than .385. none of which could be exactly the ho .410 though, but close.

i have the cam and a two complete valve train setups (valves, lifters, stems, rotators, shims etc etc etc) to send to him i just havent gotten around to it yet.

Needing 2.3 oil pump stuff? PM me...

Yeah the only reason I was thinking the lower lift was so it could clear the stock piston with a 086 headswap. Im going to send them to my guy and talk with him.

how much does 'your guy' cost?

I'm listening... But I was not aware that the HO cams will squeeze into the intake side without valve-on-piston love. If it does fit, this opens up my options greatly!
I was just going to run a LO for the intake cam and a HO for the exhaust, but if the HOs will clear both... HOORAY!

One person said they ran it and it worked. but can you really trust one person who doesnt have that engine anymore? Also a few people have measured and say its way too close for comfort.

By too close I assume they mean the clearance is there but with very little room for any valve float?
Do you think it would make any difference that I have a 96 Z24 with the 9.5:1 compression pistons?
(Rather than the 9.7:1 slugs that you have?)
I know the valve pockets on the 10:1 CR HO pistons are very near the edge of the top of the pistons,
so it may or may not make any difference...
I think when I get ready to do the head swap I will prep both sets of cams and use clay to measure
the clearance of the HO cams, then talk to a couple engine builders and machine shops to see if
the amount of clearance offered is enough in their experience... That day won't be for quite a while yet.
I have to get my Mazda ready for daily duties. I can't deliver sandwiches without a car!

Yeah I think the valves are too close to the edge of the piston for them to make a difference but you seem to have the right idea about the clearances.

I like where your going with this Cory.

I tested the clearance with clay and H.O. pistons...yet I didnt post my findings since I didnt have an 086 head to test with @ the time. I tested them with the stock LD9 head and had my machine shop measure the diff. on the 086 head and go from there.

I sent them my wiesco pistons and had them install valve reliefs. My only issue is I believe the valve reliefs sit closer to the middle on the piston on the Quad 4 than on a Twin Cam. Not sure but once I assemble it I will turn it by hand then start her if all goes well.

I'll post pics soon of what I got....but does anyone have a few pics of wiesco's with valve reliefs and Quad 4 stock pistons with the intake valve reliefs?

GMR has got nothing on this

No one ever did answer. My 95 intake cams are on their way and will be shipped right out to the grinders. Ima put the other 3 on ebay. What would be preferable regrind people would be interested in? Ill have them ground to the closest possible specs.
