Looking at some stage 2 cams from JBodyPerformance, CompCams, and the triflow cams. Some say they will throw codes, some say ecu friendly, some say no codes......just wondering whats really going to happen. Will i need to get the car tuned or are these a bolt in mod? I've heard of tuning running upwards of $600, and these cams are like $450....just wondering if its the best road to go down.
first off... all three cams your referring to are stock cams reground by ONE place- colt cams in canada. www.coltcams.com
secondly, jbp is dead so trying to go through them is worthless. LZM is a great place to deal with if you choose to. however... going directly through colt is going to save you money.

Geoffe can pretty much grind them how ever you want. Email him and ask him what profiles he can grind for your cams. Tell him what you want out of your car and ask what profiles will work the best for you. It costs around 450 for intake and exhaust.
Yes you will need a tune and also I highly advise upgrading the injectors. I have the comp stage 2s and love them. Mine threw codes on first start up but we were datalogging at the same time and it threw a lean code. Buy em find someone to tune it and don't look back, they are one of the best upgrades I've made.
How much did you end up paying for the tuning? Does it sound great too? I looked on YouTube, no cavs but plenty of 2.2 cobalts with stage 2 cams that sound excellent
Yea I love them. It has a nice lope at idle and screams up top. tuning was 250 from a local guy. ILook up Mr.Roboto on youtube or here on the JBO we did hs stage 2 cams at my house and he has some videos of him racing. He was tuned by Shifted and put down 160+ to the wheels.
You want stage 2 or 3. TUNE IT! I got my stage 3's installed and the car ran the same. Got it tuned and got 24 WHP ( of course combined with other mods). Upgrade your injectors as I am finding out now!

Well that is partially correct. It seems pretty stupid for Comp(as big as it is) not to grind cams in-house.

Look on ebay, type "ecotec cam", I was able to snag some cams...i got stage 1's for 372 brand new shipped from TN, it was a 2 day sale. I'm curious if they are directly from comp themselves. They had stage 2 and blower cams left on there. I like the sound of the stage 2 cams from youtube vids, but stage 1 is for my daily driver needs. I would def upgrade those springs if you were looking into stage 2 or above, you won't regret it!
Stage 1s require stronger springs too. It'll say so on the spec card that comes with the cams.

When upgrading cams. Would it be wise to invest in the Bottom end also, or does it put more strain on the bottom end?
So for all stages you need new springs?
Also, do comp stage 1's require a tune to run properly?
Does anybody have this setup?

Technically it does put more strain on the bottom end because you are making more power, but it can take it. The M62 puts more strain on the bottom end then a set of cams will, so you will be fine.

Yes, yes, dunno, and dunno.
Our stuck stuff sucks. I forget the exact number but i believe that our stock springs can only handle about .300 lift max and every set of cams from comp are over .400 lift.
Your car will run with the stage 1 cams and no tune, but you wont get any benefit from them. Our ECUs cannot compensate for the changes in lift and duration. See this thread for an in depth discussion:

when i look at the cams it looks like all grinds are the same price, so why not go with the stage 3s if your NA
valvetrain would be a good idea to upgrade with cams, imo..

umm, they only make power to 8000.. so you would probably rev to what airtonics revs to with his stage 3 cams.. ~8100, and he still uses the factory computer with HPT as far as i know.. i rev to 7100 and the factory computer only goes to 6400..so you can still use the factory computer

I have the triflows, they are great all around power from about 3400rpm up to redline, no codes... but they don't make the most power at the top end
Don't buy from MANTAPART!!
There is no easy ways to get HP, no magic box or gizmo... And if you get more hp, there's no way to make your car still behave and sound like a stock one. More hp usually makes your car louder, more vibrations and harder to drive...but still people hope or think maby there's some magic way to have it all, comfort, stock sound and drive.
