Rev Limiter Early?

Hello all,
I have a question regarding the rev limiter on our fine j-bodies. I drive a 99 cavalier five speed 2.2L. After installing my tach I have found out that my car hits the rev limiter at 5800 rpm. after waching a few videos on youtube and searching some posts here i find that other peoples cars rev out to 6000-6400 rpm, so i am wondering what the rev limiter is supposed to be at for this year and what may cause it to hit early if mine is in fact hitting the limiter early.
Thanks

they come with different engines.

hence the different redlines.

The factory rev limit on the '98+ 2200s is 6000 rpm. You are probably bouncing off the rev limiter, ie. hit 6000 rpm, drop back to 5800 rpm and rev back up and drop back down, etc... Also, most tachs read on the forward side of the pointer, not the center line of the pointer.

There is nothing to be gained above that rpm, except engine damage. The cam profile and cylinder head design aren't meant for that high of an rpm.
