Turbo cam questions
Saturday, August 22, 2009 6:30 PM
So i have my custom ground turbo cams from the engine in the classifieds a while back. I have measured a .437 lift but have yet to find a place that can measure the duration. My question is how would turbo cams affect the power of a N/A engine? I am thinking that I will eventually turbo the car but will be running it N/A for a while first and not entirely sure if it will be turboed yet.

man... honestly... id say its a guess and test. no one on here really has any 'turbo grind' cams to go off of from experience for a quad/twin cam.

all i know is 95% of all the really high powered cars are using ho cams and we all know how they effect n/a.

Well....there is a thread on Q4forums that shows how to measure duration but I doubt you will want to go thru the trouble. You gotta drill a hole in your cam tower and get a dial indicator onto the cam lobe.

EDIT: I think it was Ron seibeck (sp?) that did it.

I read the writeup on quad4forums but its a bit more than i will probably get into. I dont know anything about the the cams just that they were supposed to be billet from the engine kris from streetsource sold me. He never did email me the specs on the cams but they are reginds. I used a caliper to measure the lift which was .437. I cant decide whether to use these or my HO cams or a combination of the 2....possibly the regrind for the intake and HO for exhaust to flatten out the torque curve.

well, you probably won't have as much power as you would like due to lack of valve overlap that is usually present in turbo grind cams, actually, you might make less than you were before(idk what your stock cams were...i don't have that engine)....but the valve overlap helps to start the rush of air/fuel into the chamber in an na engine, and therefore, helps you get a better cylinder fill. turbo cams have less overlap, because a turbo pushes air in, so the engine doesn't have to help it. when running a turbo cam without a turbo, less overlap=less cylinder fill, which will equal less power. of course, having a higher lift might make up for it, but idk how much higher it is, so, i can't say for sure what that will do. like everyone else said, the only way to know is to try it. i'm sure it'll still run fine, but just not as good as you might think. let us know what happens!

you have custom ground turbo cams and u want to start mis matching them with HO cams why? you know nothing about the cams and u wanna mix them up...
id just use the ones that were ground together as im sure someone went into a lil detail on making them for a reason...

agreed. use one set for a bit, and see if you like em, but the exhaust and intake on those cams were made to work together. mixing two types will not be a good idea. either go with one group, or the other...unless you've done a lot of research on the 2 cams, and know how they would work if you mixed them, and no, that i don't think you would have to try to know...you should get a fair idea by looking at the specs of them.

iirc chet herbert did the grinding... so im sure if they were meant for turbo, then thats exactly what they are.

might want to call chet herbert and just inquire about em....

The mix n match would only be after i found out more about them. I have read and like the idea of a larger intake cam than exhaust cam. seems it flattens out the torque curve from what ive read like in the factory LD9 cams. Origionally I wanted to find an old crane intake cam. I was just wondering what made a difference in turbo cams, now I know its overlap so perhaps I will sell them once I find the duration.

yep, as far as i can tell, thats the biggest difference.

post your numbers once you pick whatever cams you want to use!
