Can you guys please tell me if there is a gasket between the bottom of the timing chain housing and the oil pan. Reason I ask is because I can't find the old gasket and there is no new gasket in the Felpro set I bought. I read the manual and it mentioned silicone but I see no sign of silicone either. All other gaskets are in the set but for some reason this little gasket for the front lip of the oil pan is mysteriousle missing and no sign of it ever being there. I am puzzled.

did you but just the timing gasket set? if so i dont think it comes with anything for behind, just the 2 that go around the front and then maybe the water pump, they have a complete set that also includes the cam tower gaskets and water pump gasket
the bottom of the housing seals to the oil pan via the oil pan gasket...nothing else. why would it need 2 gaskets in the same place? and it uses a small "arch looking" paper gasket to seal the housing to the block at the bottom..THAT gasket should have come in your gasket set .
Thanks Scott, as usual you are absolutely correct. The oil pan gasket is there and is made of aluminum and I thought that it was the top of the oil pan. I just used a bit of silicone to reseal this area.
What a major job it has been to replace the cylinder head on this engine. I'm used to working on small block Chevy V8's in large cars. This has probably been the most labor intensive job I have performed on any engine and I've done lots. So many fasteners, a real strange way of torquing head bolts and many hard to get at fasteners. It has been one big learning experience for me.

Its about a 3 hour job on a 2.4L in a Cavalier. You just have to get used to working on these engines.
I seriously doubt that anyone could have done this job in 3 hours unless they know magic. 300,000 k's on this '95 engine and there were lots of severely rusted and seized bolts.
I have....with lots of beer and an ipod. Its easy once you get the just of it. I would suggest a timing belt swap but I heard they dont fit on the j-bodys.
GMR has got nothing on this
Pulled head, swaped a few valves, reisnatalled head, and fired up in 3 hours. all with hand tools in the driveway. Lets just say that I have become very familure with the 2.4 and working on it.
After enough beer I could probably say that I did all that in only 2 1/2 hours.
