ok guys..decision to make...of course i already have head studs...but are MAIN studs really necassary ? not really concerned about the price just the availability, id like to put my shortblock together as soon as possible and main BOLTS are much cheaper and i can pick them up here in town. what benefits are really there for using the studs? im just kinda torn.
i used bolts last time on the stroker and didnt have an issue with them....should i hold off on the studs ? or not bother... t
thanks guys

My first build I did not have the ARP main studs, then I blew the HG and went with the ARP mains the second time around. I'd say do it just because the engine is apart. But not necessary if your not boostin I don't think.

Studs primary reason of existance is they let you grab ALL available threads in the bore rather than until the head touches the part like with bolts. This generally means studs grab a few more threads since the bolts have to come up shy some, they can't risk having the bolts hit the bottom of the hole rather than tighten down the piece. With that in mind, studs have one more thing in their bag-o-tricks. They allow you to have a finer thread on the nut side which does require more torque to set due to the thread style however this does make the 'tighness' of the bind better and reduces changes of loosening, however remote, but still.

If you need neither of those, then you don't need studs.

Do you already have the mains machined? Personally,I use what ever fasteners I'm going to be using for the build at the time of machining to avoid warping/distorting machined surfaces from different torque specs.

That being said,I have a set of studs in one of my old blocks that I could pull and send you if you want to send me yours when they come in...
