I purchased my 99 Sunfire SE in october with 82K on it it has about 87K on it now. but i've noticed there is a very loud whine emmiting from the engine, i've tried to search the JBO for a fix on this but nothing came up. the whine is soo loud it sounds like it's got a Gm charger on it or something. is there anyway i can fix this?
i don't think it's coming from the tranny cuz if i rev it lightly in neutral it still whines
no bashing please if i wanted to feel like @!#$ i would've joined honda-tech or something ('m drunk right now)
but anyways please help if you can! thanks anyways guys!
Dam.... this isn't what I was expecting when I opened this. When I read "whine" in the performance section it usually doesn't mean that there is a problem, its a good thing
This should be in maintenance but I'll try to help anyway.
Start the car and pop hood.
Take a long screwdriver, and put the handle to your ear while putting the metal end on where you think the whine is coming from.
*BE CAREFULL AROUND MOVING PARTS (fan, belt, etc...)*
You should be able to find the problem this way... then replace/repair that part. Good luck.

I hear a little whine when I drive too. I thought maybe it was normal. Although mine is not that bad.

Take a listen to your idler pulley.
Mine does the same exact thing...and i thought it was the power steering pump and or pully the garage even said thats what mine was...They put new on and made it worse...so i still dont know either...
thanks daniel i'll try it out tomorrow! and future thanks to anyone else who can help!
hmmmm......this is funny, my 2200 got 260xxx km's on it and it doesnt have a whine........or i cant hear it over my exhaust lol
also MODs please feel free to move this to the correct forum. I appologize for the inconvience
My guess is that it's not coming from the engine itself. Probably the alternator, or an idler pulley like suggested.

oh oh ohhh i know! u rigged a supercharger onto your 2200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it a whine or more of a squweal? If it's the later, it may be your serpentine belt.
I have no signiture
this is a deffinite whine like sounds like s/c whine, but no i would never rig a s/c on a 4cyl thats just a waste of money
Definitely check the PS pump. Does it feel sluggish at all?
fortune cookie say: better a delay than a disaster
power wise? not really, has trouble chirping 2nd but i think i need a new clutch for that.... i didn't even think of that tho, i'll check it out, i notice that the whine is louder as the RPM's go up

agreed with brian warren, probaly half the people on this site are S/Ced 4cyls
most noises emitted from the 2200 is from its shear insane amounts of power.....

glad to see we have a sense of humor here hehe
but i don't really think they're waste of money but seriously 3K for a GM charger thats a little much for only 50-60 more HP o_O @!#$ for that kinda price i'd rather go turbo anyways, more power, and you can control the boost easier
also you left out my "
" that signifies it's a JOKE

Might be just a whistle from it trying to successfully pull enough air through the head. Kinda like when one goes to the bar, gets drunk, and ends up smoking a whole pack of cigarettes in a couple hours. Sounds about the same.
