Possible Dyno day for me
Tuesday, October 12, 2010 12:43 PM
There's going to be a dyno day locally that I'd like to attend and have the 'blu dyno'd.
It'll be with a group of gearheads that have the usual hot rod Mustangs, 'Vettes, Evo's, Srt-4's etc so I'll be the little man of the day for sure.
But the question came up about me being an automatic tranny and how I'd have to lock up the torque converter in third gear to do the dyno run and get a good pull.
They also said that I'd have to keep the car from down shifting while doing the pull so since I've never done this before, am asking those that have auto's to chime in and let me know what you did to get your pulls.
Btw it's 50 bucks for three pulls with the amount of people that are going so that's a good price to say the least.

I'd like to get some baseline runs before I go supercharged so this is a good opportunity to see how little power the car has. lol
Thanks all.

You can lock the car into third with HPTuners...

The car otherwise is going to want to downshift. I think we played around at about 55-60mph with the shifter in third my cav wouldn't down shift to second when you mashed the gas. It hit the speed limiter in third at around 5800 RPMS just a side note...

I hope that helps, but now that I have HPTuners it would be completely different.

I'll check into it and do a temp type tune specific for the dyno.
Thanks.

Just take practice to be consistent in a manual

It still takes a good driver to be consistent with an auto.
It took three years of practice to finally win back to back trophies in bracket racing and experience played a big part in winning those.
I really wish it was that easy.

Thanks all.

Be real Jason. lol
It looks like it will be Nov. 21'st if this happens.
Hopefully by then I'll have a job or some extra money to do this. I've been dying to do this for sooooo long.
Hope it pans out.

true but for the average person ( like me) that rarely goes to the track auto and drag is a good thing... you saw my woes with tracking lmao I'll stick to road race/autox

Good luck blue hopefully you can get the dyno time, I wanna see yours can do

I'm with the ugh auto crowd. I dont understand how people can stand to daily drive them. Only use for um is bracket racing. If you're daily driving, road racing, or auto-xing (or drifting I guess but you can't do that in a fwd car) its manual all the way. Non bracket drag racing can go either way though.

Sit in traffic for a couple hours and tell me you love a manual.

Been there done that, left foot gets a little tired but its a heck of a lot less boring than doing it in an auto.

Oh and for holding it into gear you could do some wiring magic to make it hold in whatever gear you want and also lock up the torque converter but you'd need to look up a bunch of schematics and tables for the tranny to figure out what wires need to be connected to where.

And funny story, if your tcc locks up in the middle of the run it makes a loopdeloop. I know I have the graphs of my saturn which was a fail-o-matic. Like this.

realistically... with your 1/4 mile times and weight... id say your somewhere near 150whp.

I think the car is quicker now but that's probably got alot to do with the weight reduction.
But yeah, about 150whp is what I'm wanting to see.
I'll be playing with HPT on the tranny settings so it'll stay locked in 3rd gear for the pulls.

I do this all of the time and have no issues with it.
I'd much rather have a stick over auto anyday and was my main criteria for the last couple of cars that I bought and any future car that will be owned.
Auto is fail and Leafy said it best.
All the work done to the Cavy and it's not a joy to drive although it is a joy to drive, it's the actual DRIVING that is lost in the auto slush box.
I have everything for the manual conversion ready except the tranny and installing it. It won't be that much longer.

i have, its still not that impressive.

i bought my auto for one reason, to cruise car shows with and have a nice car that isnt blowing trannies and clutches all the time. the 5spd is still there for the days where id rather get down and dirty than up and clean.

Uhm..... being a manual transmission guy myself i'll be the first to put it out there. It's humanly impossible to shift faster than a properly tuned automatic.

Jason, who cares?
You can't heel/ toe an automatic now can you?
It's not all about going fast in a straight line.

If I remember correctly it is in the scanner somewhere you can lock the car in any gear.....

Yup, that's what I was told would work.
I'll have to look at the VC Scanner next time I'm in the car to see if it has that feature and try to work it.
I'm hoping that the 97 year has this feature as the newer models I've worked with have more settings with tuning than mine.
I've still got so much to learn with my HPT.
