Tapping eco fuel rail..
Monday, January 24, 2011 4:40 PM
Ive searched a bit and cant seem to find much on it. Im wanting to tap my fuel rail like the 2.4 guys do for a fuel pressure gauge. With the impending boost I want to be able to monitor it if there is an issue.

Is there enough meat to tap the rail and get a good seal, or do I gotta get a bung welded on? And what are you guys with your rails tapped using for sealing it..Teflon tape?

depends on the rail.

03-05 is your best bet.

I'm not sure 'how the 2.4 guys do it'.... could you be a bit more specific as to what you're trying to accomplish?
I understand you want a rail mounted fuel pressure gauge, but where are you planning on putting it?

any reason you're against an in-car mounted fuel pressure gauge?

apologies, double post... wi-fi tethering fail.

Adjusting fpr is easier with one under the hood

this is true, but how often do you adjust the FP?

I like having a gauge in the car so I can keep an eye on fuel pump health (more important for boosted cars tho imo)

I have one in car, have one for the rail too just havn't done it yet

Here is what I did to my LN2 fuel rail to monitor pressure:

1/8" NPT 304 SS nipple TIG'd right on there. I then put a 90 degree female x female elbow into the male sending unit. If you can't weld it yourself, drill the hole in the rail and cut the nipple in half. I can't see a weld shop charging more than 5 dollars, maybe even free.

I forgot to add, I think tapping is a BAD idea. All the fuel rails I have ever seen are about 1/16 inch thick, at most. That is not even enough for like 1 thread engagement.

I believe the rule is at least half the threads should be threaded

I have been taught that 3 is the bare minimum; preferably 5.

I was planning on putting it between 2 and 3 injectors, right by the hump on the 03 rail.

Reason for wanting a rail mounted..cheaper, and really not wanting anymore gauges then the 4 I have. Typically if I have a engine issue I have the hood open, and its easy to check if the fuel pressure is constant. I understand that ideally I should have both..but at this point I was looking for a cheap upgrade so at least I have an idea.

Sounds like I should get a bung welded on.

the eco fuel rail is cast aluminum, and a LOT thicker than the OHV rail.

my fuel pressure sender is hooked up to the port that I have on my aeromotive AFPR tho so I didn't have to tap the rail for that.

I DID however cut off the fuel rail's feed line quick fitting, and drilled out the feed side and the return (where the FPR normally sits) and tapped them for NPT threads so I could use an NPT to AN adapter and use straight -AN fittings and hoses throughout my entire fuel system.

so, tapping a fuel rail is perfectly acceptable assuming it is thick enough (as you pointed out) in which case, the 03-05 rail is fine.

the 2002 eco rail however is a more elaborate design (which I won't get into the details here), while the 03-05 rail is just an open space inside (which is why I asked which rail you planned on using.. modding the 02 rail for a fuel pressure gauge would be kind of impossible)

instead of drilling and tapping the rail, why not utilize the schrader valve on the return line?

If he hooks up for in car one that's probably what he will use. That's what I did for mine. Btw pj I want your intake manifold i'll pm u my address

Ha..thats my old intake mani! damn I miss it.

As for the shrader valve....looks I suppose. I do plan on changing things to -an in the future but for now..yah.

I think im going to tap it ....worst case I drill it and its not thick enough ill weld it thicker

Just use the schraeder valve on the fuel line like I did. BTW, it's the same as a 4AN fitting.

I don't know why this thread went so far. As stated there is the schrader valve right there on the line. You don't get any easier then that. That's where I'm tapped in
