Gas Gauge off help
Monday, January 23, 2012 7:10 AM
When I bought my 99 z24 cavy the gas gauge was already off. The guy said its not my needle its something to do with the gas tank. It isn't accurate at all, one minute you drive it its on full next thing you know its at a quarter tank. Any ideas?

I'd try a new cluster before replacing the fuel pump module. Another option would be to drop the tank, and check for corrosion at the electrical plug an the pump.

Yep, try a different cluster before anything else.

I would bet it is the sender in the tank, but I would check the cluster first.

The fuel level sensor is probably bad. It's the float that is attached the fuel pump. You'll have to drop the tank. Fun times

pop the wire off the sender 0-90 ohms via how much gas you have in the tank....... Back of cluster is the easiest way...

your lack of info is amazing

you should read 40 ohms empty and 250ohms full.

try the cluster first as its easiest but hten i would be droppin gthe tank and replacing the level sensor i would run the tank low so its lighter but on a 99 you have a steel tank and it could be in rough shape you may be into a new tank if its really rusted.

if you drop the tank make sure you buy a set of tank straps cause your gonna need them and if you don't then take them back

Number of ohms is dependent on year.

If you drop the tank, you may be braking fuel lines also. I did when i dropped my 99s tank. I ended up with a new tank, new straps, stainless hardware, and the racetronix pump.
